I sold one of my cars on E-gay. I'm probably being punished for doing so, because the winning bidder is from Austria. If it is legit, I'm happy to do so. I'd love to see the car end up in the hands of someone who may not have access to a whole lot of old cars. It seems that it mght be better appreciated in an area like that,,,, however..... Has anyone dealt with selling a car to Austria??? scam? Anyone done this?
I sold parts to a guy in Bulgaria. Customs was his affair, not mine. The european guys should be chiming in here any minute.
Easy. Tell him to send you the money, at least half of the winning bid and you'll hold the car for 30 days. If he doesn't come to get it or arrange a shipper ON HIS OWN by then he's out the money. He should have been mentally logisitally and finacially prepared to do the deal when he bid. If not, he will be next time. Vance
Probobly not a scam, have him call you and you would know for sure! There are companys that handle all the shipping and paperwork from cali to europe so it should go down smoothly!
there is some austrian guys here, like Rainer, aka Roddin28, maybe he can help you.: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/member.php?userid=2877
There are CERTIFIED Escrow companies that can safely handle these kinds of transactions. They collect from the buyer. You ship. They pay you when they get proof the car has shipped. YOU select the one you want to hold the money. Then you are protected.
I have bought and sold across the Atlantic. From your perspective, it isn't much different than selling a car to someone in another state. First he pays, second- you will be contacted by a forwarder/agent who will tell you where to send the title (it gets inspected by customs prior to the car leaving the US) he will also want the bill of sale; and last - the forwarder tells you when a flatbed will pick up the car to take it to Long Beach/Carson or wherever the container loading will take place. You can be friendly and offer to deliver the car to the warehouse but there is no requirement that you do so. Just make it clear to the forwarder how much help you are willing to give.
I have shipped a lot of parts to australia, and even talked to some of the guys over the phone. Every aussie I have dealt with has been a stand up guy.
Cool Thanks guys... I don't want to come off like an ass... I'd actually be really excited to know that it went overseas. It's just the unknown that scares me. I've had a couple nightmare ebay experiences, and dealing with another country, I'm just not sure what recourse I have if I get ripped off.. I hope I'm just being paranoid, and like I said I don't want to come off like an ass, the buyuer may be the nicest guy in the world. I don't know,, it's just that the feedback is private. I can't search history of the guys login,, ebay wont let me, and I sent emails yesterday and today, but heard nothing back yet.. but it could just be the time change, and language barrier???
Well, he's probably 9 hours ahead of you, and if my experience is anything to go by, should have good to excellent english. It is worth noting that any overseas buyer has to be 10 times more committed to put up with all the extra cost involved. He's probably a very dedicated individual. Mart.
Sold a car to a fellow in Italy, easy deal. He wired the money to me and did all the paperwork and arranged to have a rollback pick it up and take it to the docks. I would have been clueless if the rolls were reversed. Selling stuff overseas and making friends makes for a nicer world.
Not to highjack your post, but I have a chance to move to Bulgaria, and had wondered about shipping an old car there. Any words of wisdom?
helped arrange a car to Denmark. Have the new owner arrange the shipping/ Customs with a company that does that stuff. when you deliver the car to the port (or whom ever is picking it up, have the money wired to your bank account (or whom ever is picking it up pay for it). we signed the title over to the port (shipping company) and they will handle the transfer once it arrives at its destination..
I just finished with a deal for my friend. I hope your guy isnt named Martin G. If he is he desnt come through. I got involved because i can speak german (just barely fluent) My buddy asked me to do some of the stuff for him in that language. The guy sounded good at first but then even after winning the bid and apparently making arrangements he whimped out. Car was a Hot Rod Caddy (basically restored but with a done OLDs 455 that was carefuly bolted in so as not to disrupt anything on the car. My pal Jake also had the original engine and trans (still working fine when pulled and it was in the deal too.) The car had had a frame off rotiserie restoration and was in great condition. The guy got it for a measely $13500 but never came through when it was time to anti up. Was a very disappointing deal to say the least. Otherwise I think they have the will and the gold. Usually they will arrange shipping. I sold a motor into europe this spring and it was ok. Still though it was, to be honest, a hassle Don
Use an escrow service. It's your best protection. You should outline the terms with him in writing and proceed in a step by step fashion according to the escrow requirements.
Damn, kinda sends a chill up my back. I have a Austrian as high bidder on my car on the bay. He also has private feedback, so I can't check him out. I wonder if it is the same guy? I'm sending you a PM with his name so we can connect if it is the same guy. Dick
