leather cups have the spring more often than rubber ones. How the cup is attached is important. A few pictures of the pump assembly will help us figure out what to use. If it had leather riveted in place, you might be able to fix it without having to get a specific part.
If you're looking at an engine swap don't use a tired old Morris A or B Series engine. Keep the Datsun all Datsun and drop an SR20DET from an S15 in there. 220HP and a 5 speed. Also you may find parts in Australia for it as we had quite a few of that model back in the day.
Oh I've allready considered keeping a Nissan in a Nissan. I have zero experience with those engines, and the fuel injection stuff scares me honestly. Im not new to modern motor swaps, just new to JDM. LS swaps are simple as hell now. I just need to learn more about the other stuff. Sr20 does look like a good fit Heres one side by side with a MG Also having the intake moved to the other side would be very beneficial.
Yes i know it's disgusting amd needs a full redo. At this point i just want it to run. I found info on Ratsun.net where someone was able to use a rubber cup from a quadrajet, they had a '63 whereas mines a '60... different carb #s. Mine is a 1A, and i think theirs was a 1B
That cup I pictured early could well be for a Qjet. You'd probably have to grind away most of the washer to fit it on yours, though. sure looks like a leather cup type pump. but surely it will run without the acc pump working? a squirt can of gas or monkey with the choke to get it running, then ease the throttle down to rev it up?
It runs and idles like a sewing machine now. Just wont rev unless the choke is on. I stole parts out of a carb i had laying around. Q-jet is 1 size too big. I can force it into the hole, but it gets stuck and pops off the rod when you try to move it. The orginal was definitely leather.
Sr20 engines are imported into the States and are widely used. The engine would have appeared in USDM cars as well.
I've seen plenty available. Which would be the simplist naturally aspirated variant? Talking least wiring and programing..
FWIW, a buddy in high school in 1964 had a used Datsun sedan with four on the tree. I haven't heard of that again until this thread. Fort Lee, VA was very close, so maybe a GI brought it back from Japan. Can't remember if it was right hand drive, though.
It looks about the size & shape of the 1200CC Toyota 4. (it might work) I had a 77 Corolla that would wind & wind like a motorcycle engine !! It came with a split exhaust that turned into one just aft of the firewall. Also had a 'wicked' lil two-stage carb. With the air cleaner flipped upside-down it sounded pretty awsome (considering)! ALL this tied to a 5-speed tranny...41 mpg was my best check. Still ran leaded regular gas.. Butt-ugly little car butt very stingy on gas..... 6sally6
Looks like a number of Aisan (Toyota) pumps. Decades ago, I bought (and scrapped) a pallet of Toyota kits and repurposed the pumps into Stromberg. Jon
I just ordered a pump for a Chevy Luv. Its a 15mm o.d. seal, also from a Hitachi carb. Maybe I'll get lucky this time
Hillbilly, SR20DE (the DET is the turbo) and the wiring is fairly easy if you get the loom for it. Wiring diagrams are available from Forums and on-line. The DE only has 155hp. We run a DET in our Suzuki MightyBoy (Google it) it weighs less than 1,500lbs.
Buy that old imported truck, it'll be loads of fun. I'm sure parts are available... On to wheel cylinders next, while i sit here praying USPS can ship my carb parts 1 state over without losing them.
I talked to Rocco & Cheaters today on those rims. Unfortunately he only has 3 of those wheels. Sucks because i have tires for them and i think they'd look great on this truck. Anyways, got my stock rims back today. If you google "Datsun dog dish hubcaps" you get more hits on dog bowls than you do for poverty caps... Tires tomorrow. Im gonna go try and buy some striping paint also.
I called the local brake shop this morning. THE go to guy in our area for any and all brake parts. The guy made my shoes and cut my drums for my 53 Desoto years ago. When i told him i need a simple 1" wheel cylinder cup he laughed at me. "Nobody does that shit anymore. Go buy new." I explained new doesnt exist... I tell ya with the decline of my local NAPA store in recent years i all but gave up on looking to them for anything old. It sucks because they were always the store with the old timers who either knew the numbers by heart or were willing to look in a book. Today i got lucky and found someone willing to listen. He didnt know what a brake wheel cylinder was, but he knew how to do a search in the system haha. Got lucky today
Ok, this is my OEM accelerator pump side by side with one from a chevy luv. The diameter is perfect! The luv's rod is 1/4" shorter , the plunger is higher, and the base is different. It will go on the carburetor like it belongs there. Will it work? If not explain why. The rod still will be moving the same distance, so it should be pushing the same amount of fuel...
So i tried using the new one. It didn't work. Wasn't pushing enough fuel. Then i attempted to get the rubber off so i could swap it over. I ripped it. Back to where i was....
Waiting on accelerator pump seals to be delivered. I bought a few different ones this time. In the meanwhile I've been trying to get my brakes working. For some reason i cant get a hard pedal. New master, new lines and hoses, rebuilt wheel cylinders. Pedal only gets hard with lots of pumping. Heres a boring garage pic. Im working on this in my unfinished garage at home. I lost my shop back in February from snow. I was spoiled, had it all. Tools, lift, ELECTRICITY... Now I'm doing all my work with a friggin flashlight strapped to my head haha.
Never noticed until now how much the front resembles a Mini. And this isn’t a boring pic, it looks like progress!
So my buddy was at the parts store getting stuff for his mini cooper(modern) and the guy working the counter told him about a mini cooper pickup truck that went by on a trailer the day before haha Take the grill badge off and nobody would know
If you can find original part numbers, you can use Impex Japan to find most anything you need. Problem is that Megazip doesn’t list it, so you have no reference to the part numbers. Impex is a finder service in Japan
I look for leaks at night with a flashlight. Clean up everything first with carb cleaner or whatever you like. Wait for dark, go out with as little background light pollution as possible and look for seepage.
