I didn't pull the engine to change the cam back in those days. I did have to hacksaw a hole in the OT bronco grill to get the cam out and back in. Then drove it from Arkansas to Iowa and back to Texas. Oh to be young like Lloyd again.

Lol I didn't pull the engine, but when I was a teenager, we didn't have a garage, or a gantry, or engine hoist, we had a tree lol. I just took my grille out. :D

The original Bronco grills didn’t come off by themselves. Thus the hacksaw. But when I was a kid we borrowed the neighbor’s swing set and swapped the engine in the rambler for the hydroplane’s 265 race motor. By morning the engine was swapped and the swing set back mostly unharmed.

Edit: because it didn’t really happen if there isn’t any pictures.

I don't know if there is anything to this or maybe just dumb luck, A couple of years ago I put a cam and lifters in my off topic 66 SS396 Chevelle. I was aware of all the cam and lifter failures and decided to go with a cam and lifters from Isky. I figured that a well known company like that that had been in business for 75 years wouldn't want to tarnish their reputation by offering parts that were the least bit questionable. When I was ready to fire it I made sure of the timing and filled the float bowls on the carb and it lit off immediately, I ran it at 2500 for 20 minutes with valvoline racing oil and everything has been great. I took their advice on cam selection and chose one a little milder than I originally wanted and it pulls real hard. Just like Lloyd found out, those rumpity rump rough idle cams bleed off usable street horsepower

Isky cams and probably most of the newer grinds make good power without the radical lope of old. I put an Isky in the 505 and it sounds downright tame at idle with good vacuum. But it made 656 at 6400 in an 8.5:1 engine naturally aspirated and 4 digit power with the same engine and 8 lbs of boost. Lloyd may like the driving results enough to not want to change back to a rowdy cam. I can’t wait to hear the tales of his journey and his race results.

I'll throw another vote out in favor. Heck, even if you don't do the panels that shade of orange just yells "badass"!
Sorry you had issues with the cam but glad you got it sorted so quickly. That's what buddies do.
    It's, like, a brotherhood or sumthin'....

Great trip down here, always loved this city. The car ran awesome, cool, never skipped a beat. And 12mpg lol. Enloe, Darin, Wayne, and Ethan came by to hang out, and we ran into Bruce King at double dogs restaurant. If you're here, hopefully we get to meet up!

Nah, not this time, LLoyd. Good to see the '55 made it. Gonna change the oil in Bowling Green? Not like you even have to jack it up.

Yep, I have a brand new engine that flattened a cam lobe in the shop and I need to pull it apart and see how much damage it did to the bearings. I was planning to put all new bearings in, but a guy would hope that the filter would catch most of the metal.

  22. No problem, the oil pump grinds all the big pieces into little pieces.

  23. When I was working on school buses, my fleet was 80% Chevrolet 366 powered. I had 35 buses and replaced at least 2 cam and lifter kits each school year. This was on a fleet that changed oil and filters every 2 months regardless of miles accumulated. We never disassembled engines. We just changed the oil and filter and put the bus back into service. Do you guys actually believe that when cams went flat and the cars were still covered under warranty, that GM paid to completely disassemble the engines, not a chance in hell. Knowing how warranty work is done, I wouldn’t be surprised if they reused the still serviceable lifters.

Always going to be some (hopefully very small) amount of wear metal floating around in any engine. It might be worth putting a magnetic drain plug in this one when he dumps the oil and filter.

Mother Thumper cams and those gear drive timing set ups, classic poser ricky racer crap. @Lloyd's paint & glass , this is the first I saw of your wiped cam and lifters. That sucks. Glad you got it back together. Somewhere in the world there is a 69 SS 396 Chevelle with a notch in the back of the grille for the cam to clear. Do what you gotta do.

Shit, I barely get 12mpg on my bone stock OT 75 C10… And it makes maybe 185 horsepower?

I love this thread. It’s a throwback to what the HAMB used to be like.

  27. Don't tell Littleman that motherthumper cams means he's Ricky Racer

And don't tell me a quiet cam sounds better than a rowdy cam, because that is total b.s. lol
