Looks like I am going to be assembling a 40 Ford Sedan Delivery. Since I didn't take it apart and have never worked on a 40 Ford, I am going to have lots of head scratching and questions. Here are a couple of questions to get me started. 1. Are there any books or manuals available that show details of body assembly. You know - door hardware, door seals, window regulators, etc. (The chassis and drivetrain aren't stock and are already assembled. Body is on the chassis and car has been painted.) 2. What parts are different from 40 Ford coupe or sedan? Are window seals same? 3. Since I have to buy glass and seals, how difficult would it be to eliminate the vent window on a painted vehicle? Thanks for your help.
Doors , windows and hardware same as a 4 door sedan and coupe ( the top rear edge of the coupe doors are shaped differently), To do away with the vents you would need the window tracks and garish moldings from 1937-39 doors later kb
Eliminating the vents on a painted car will be difficult, there is a small indentation in the window opening for the divider bar to fit into. I removed the vents on my SD and filled those spots. Basically everything forward of the rear edge of the door opening is the same as Fordor. I used the same seal on the top of the back door as what is used on the top of the side doors. There is noting for the rest of the door so water will run in and fill the spare tire well in heavy rain.
Ugh. Thanks. I was so hoping to get rid of that poorly designed vent window scheme but I will have to live with it, I guess. Spare tire well has been eliminated, as the gas tank now resides in that area.
Hello, Well, since the gas tank has been moved to the rear, you now have a large space behind the seat under the boards. It would make a good lockable lined compartment for…. The one thing that a lot of sedan delivery models had was an aroma of gas, if the cap needed a new seal or was accidently fastened. The inlet was so close to the seats that even if the outlet/inlet was outside, the pipe still had connections to the tank. So, for an old car, it did require replacement, clamps and a new cap. Once the new connecting pipe hoses, clamps and cap were installed in the old Flathead powered sedan delivery, there was no more smell. Jnaki As soon as my wife and I bought a different 327 powered 40 Ford Sedan Delivery as 20 somethings, we did the same thing to prevent the gas aroma to float around inside of the cave and driver/passenger compartment. No gas aroma was outstanding on those long road trips. But, we did consider turning the rear under the floor compartment into a gas tank. The space near/behind our flip up bucket seats would have been turned into a “secret compartment” of sorts. Yes, why would we need an extra compartment when we have a huge cave? We need an out of view space to hold our camera gear and stuff we took on our road trips. The suitcases found a home strapped down in the rear cave, but we had to take the camera case with us when we went inside a restaurant or out of sight of the sedan delivery. Note: Even if we moved the gas tank to the rear, there were few places we could run the fill pipe and cap. We did not want an interior fill cap… the old fumes situation would have arisen again… YRMV
X2 to poco. Had a 48 Aero Sedan I removed the vent windows on. Loved the look but really missed the vents.
I will have AC. I have other old cars with vent windows and i never open them. I wear hearing aids and wind noise is very annoying. Why would it be a big mistake for me?
I don't own a vehicle with vent windows and with the windows being so small, they looked goofy so I removed them and love it.
Does anyone reproduce the side spear trim on 40 Fords? Is the Sedan Delivery's trim specific to that model? I have the originals but one is kinked. Not sure it can be straightened.
After looking at mine, I believe it can be straightened. I should receive the car tomorrow. Dave Phelps is bringing it home. I'll start a thread in the OT section as it's chassis is definitely OT but I will keep it traditional looking. Lots of work to do. Thanks!
