I saw the Beach Boys perform at the Ohio State Fair back in my youth (probably the 70's). They have been around so long that it seemed as if they would always be around. As has been said many times, Brian was definitely a musical genius. His decision to stop (or cut back) on touring was controversial with some, but he stayed home and continued to crank out great songs. His music will never be irrelevant.

  2. Was sadden to hear this news. The Beach Boys have always been a major part of my life growing up as their music was always playing at my grandparents.

They have been on repeat too a lot lately as my grandpa and I finally spent all our saved penny’s and dimes and got us 409, lol.

“Don’t you think the Beach boys are boss?” Is a line from what movie?

  4. Count me in an another who was influenced by The Beach Boys and the California dream. God speed to Brian and my sympathies to the family.

Back in the day if your were at a dance and everyone was just kind of sitting around and not dancing all it took was one Beach Boys song and the floor would be packed. Same holds true today.

Released in 1985. Written by Brian and Al, nice throw back to their early sound, same album that had Getcha Back on it.

Born at Castle A.F.B. in 1953, so being 10 years old in 63, was an interesting time. I saved my Christmas money and my birthday money till I had the $33.00 it cost to by my first clock radio.

Our only radio station in our area, that played anything that was a combination of rock and roll and bubblegum, was the AM radio station, "KYOS" in Merced.

That little General Electric clock radio with its little single mono 3" speaker, was my only connection to any kind of music at all, at least at my house out in the country, 3 miles outside of Winton.

Our area in the hot, dusty hell hole, of the San Joaquin Valley was all dirt and we were not close to the ocean, like places like Monterey, or Carmel or places like Los Angeles or Southern California.

But with the Beach Boys music playing a lot on KYOS as I was growing up, indeed the music of the Beach Boys was amazing, and great to listen to!

I liked a lot of their music, but the tune "Good Vibrations" will always make me smile!

  10. Yes, @CTaulbert’s restoration of the "Silver Sapphire" is simply amazing!

Note also that the restored coupe was painted by Darryl @Hollenbeck32 at his VCS logo.JPG shop in Concord, CA . . .

. . . and that the car is currently getting its upholstery done at Sid @Hotrodstitcher’s SidCo logo.jpg shop in San Marcos, CA.

    Rest in peace, Brian Wilson.

Jim always admired Brian’s genius - he called the Beach Boys one of his favorite groups. I felt it too. Brian had a way of crafting harmonies that felt like California itself. We were making very different music, but chasing the same thing: something honest, something lasting.

It's been a tough stretch lately as a lot of hot rodding and racing icons have passed. During my early teens growing up along the ocean on the east coast it was Hot Rod magazine and the Beach Boys that allowed me to vicariously stay tuned to the west coast. While the surfing on the east coast isn't that well known, it is a thing. To this day I still have my Little Deuce Coupe vinyl album in the house and the album cover photo in my shop. God speed.

    the music behind the music:
well worth the watch. you will recognize many of the characters.

  20. The Beach Boys were my dad's favorite band. The last time I saw him alive, my sister had them playing in the room in her house he was staying in. I always liked the BB because my dad liked them, and then they grew on me as well. God Only Knows is basically a perfect song. Brian Wilson was a prodigy. People talk about how bubble gum their music can be, but he wrote some incredible melodies and very poignant lyrics, too.

I was lucky enough to have my 48 Chevrolet Woodie at two of their concerts on the stage. I got a surfboard and a Stratocaster guitar signed by them. I moved to south Florida from South Bend Indiana and sold my collection to a fanatic collector of Beach Boys Memorabilia, my wife and I have seen at least 20 concerts. The last with Brian was when we lived on Lake Norman NW of Charlotte. The last few were with Mike Love, his son, John Stamos on drums, Al Jardine and Whitey (can't remember his name) Always put on a great concert. Don't know why they still tour so much, it must be the love of the music and crowds that keep them going. He was certainly a music genius RIP.

First time I ever heard this song..... It's beautiful!...:)

  23. Very sad day, the passing of a legend and musical prodigy. If you get the chance, watch the movie, Love and Mercy, about Brian.

  24. It’s definitely worth watching. Plus it has a brief cameo of Tom Branch’s roadster. IMG_5799.jpeg

The Beach Boys meant the world to me back it the day! My first years were in Southern California, Ventura/ Oxnard. Moved back to Oklahoma in 57! Spent may hours on a tractor listening to them….wishing I was back on the beach instead of in the middle of a field!
I bought all their albums, that I could afford! Little Deuce coupe, Shutdown, and others. I even built an album cabinet to hold them! It is still in my Moms house! Living in Oklahoma, I didn’t get to see them in their heyday, but several years ago I got to see them in Tulsa! It was a moving experience!

    RIP, Brian!

Late career classic. This is a great album if you’re a BB fans. Brian wrote a lot/most of the material along with Al Jardine, Mike Love and Bruce J.

had one from Philco Radios circa 1947-ish.under a picture of the radio was the ditty:

"a rich man can never buy what a poor man gets from listening to the radio"
