It’s hard to see the cars that people rode in to Northerly Island during the 1933-‘34 Century Of Progress on the shore of Lake Michigan but no doubt it was a thrilling attraction at the time. The two towers were 628’ tall and it looks that the cars might have been about 200’ off the ground.

WOW!! I poked around some more, and found the model!! It's a Monogram kit, Futurista circa 1965. I have looked for years for this and never found any info. It was my first model kit, and dad helped me assemble it. The front wheel actually steered with the handle. Amazing the crap we can remember from our childhood. futurista.jpg

Crystal Pier San Diego, Santa Monica Pier, Stearns Wharf Santa Barbara and The Santa Cruz Municipal Pier allow continuous driving on the piers, not just for woody car shows.

    Hello,

The Pacific Beach area is a nice coastal town area for visitors and residents. It has the feel of a small 60s town attached to the big metropolitan city area of San Diego. It only takes a few minutes from the downtown area and harbor to reach the Pacific Beach area. It is a window to the large Mission Bay aquatic area for vacationers and locals with boat access to the ocean or calm waters of Mission Bay.

Crystal Pier is the only live aboard facilities on any pier on the Westcoast of the USA. Back when we were little, our dad took us there because he loved pier fishing, deep sea fishing and casting his line from the miles of sandy shoreline. The plus was the rental unit was right on the pier and within several minutes, he had access to miles of rocky outcroppings and white sand beaches for surf fishing. He surf fished, our mom stayed under the umbrella, while, the two young brothers ran all over the sand and shallow waters.

The “odd” pier arrangement was/is the Crystal Beach Pier in San Diego. (just North of Mission Bay and Sea World) Built in 1930’s it has gone through many upgrades.

You can drive out onto the pier, but you must be a temporary resident from one of those cottages located on the pier.

But, this pier has tons of history and you do get your chosen cottage and private parking location.

Pacific Beach in San Diego County is an odd ball place. It is a long sandy beachfront that goes from La Jolla in the North to Mission Beach and the Mission Bay in the South. It takes only minutes to continue down the coastline to get to Point Loma with the goal of the nearby greater San Diego Harbor and huge bay.

We have been going down to San Diego area ever since we were little kids, plus the surf era in the early 60s-70s, the later years, sailing adventures out of the harbor, and enjoyed the different coastal living/activities.
