I love these posts. A 960-AA is wired between the gauge and the sender, therefore you need to wire it, as stated, between the gauge and sender. Now if 960-AA is a mechical gauge, you will have to mechicanically (sp) do it. Now the value of a perfect 960-AA is WOOOW! Why would you use it? I suggest that you gouge out an eye and put the gauge in a monical and wear it like the true gift it is.......... Sorry, must be a bad day....p.s....do a real intro.....
ill put this older thread back to the top, i also have a 960-aa and am wondering the wiring schematic, ive seen posted many places that this tach does not require a sender, there are only 2 isolated posts on the back of the tach so im ***uming one is keyed ignition and one is -side of the coil, and then the ground would hook up to one of the mounting studs, im just trying to figure out which stud is which. thanks JEFF
well i believe i figured it out, i have a couple of these tachs and i remembered one has wiring on it, so i took a peak, the have the dash light wired to the driver side stud (or right side if your looking at the back of the gauge) on the gauge so im betting thats going to be the power, i will be testing the gauges later today and will let you know the results.
***us I think you will find that the 960 series tachs require a seperate sender. There were three senders available at the time, one for standard ignition (points), one for electronic ignition (types available in early 60s) and one for magneto. Quite often available on e-gay, quite often at exorbident prices. A small rectangular box with 5 terminals on the top. Coded with a letter for the different applications. Had all the wiring and parts info but lost in computer crash. Sent a copy of the install instructions to Dave Mann at http://www.roadsters.com/welcome/ , he may be able to help you. Canuck
I believe the 970 series tachs need a sender but the 960s dont, still not sure, i have read in several places that the 960s dont, and even a guy on ebay posted a video of his working hooked up to power and a distributor and it worked fine. so not sure on that. I have one of the d-990-a senders nos in the box, picked it up at a swap a few years back for penies. lol! And ill be testing one later today and let you know if i fri it!
Hi, I just bought a stewart warner 960-AA and don't know how to wire it. I'm sure this model of tach does'nt need a sender. There is 4 plugs (2 isolated for ignition and coil (- or +), and 2 for ground and mounting). I know some guys here have this tach, can you help about the wiring ? Thanks and best regards from France
Hi, I have found the original install instructions: On back : Isolated Copper stud to the - coil, isolated silver stud to ignition switch and one of the two non isolated studs to the ground. And it´s work perfect !!! Ps: and thanks ***us for the help ;-)
Old thread, but my 960-BF (circa 1960’s) works only when hooked up to the positive (+) terminal on the coil, not the negative. Is that normal?
I read that some older tachometers are meant to be hooked up to the positive terminal on the coil. Is a 960-BF one of them? Again, it does nothing when hooked up to the negative side of the coil.

I don't know what kind of car you are working on but is it possible that your coil is installed wrong? the plus terminal is supposed to go to the ign (12v +) and the minus terminal is supposed to the points. and yes the car will still run if wired wrong
It’s a 59 elco 348. Hmm… I’ll have a look when I get home from work. Anything’s possible. That seems like it could explain it, no? Thanks for the suggestion!
Well, that was it… in my haste last week I hooked up to leads in reverse after installing a new coil… I think I just ***umed it was right because it was running… but not great. Makes so much sense now and I feel a bit silly. Thanks for the insight!
@Bruno Columban , We all do something Silly , One time a mad dash in pits I put 1 of Quick change pad's in backwards , @ top end on brakes ,a Light show with sparks & Destroyed rotor.
