My current situation with family and work dont allow me alot of shop time. I have since sent a few projects down the road. This is the project that would take the least amount of resources (time, money, time close to the house etc..) and give me that rod fix. i have decided to spend some time on this driver/ project. It still has the factory primer under the floor pan and in the trunk and only the slightest amount of rust, one paint job over the original. My question to you is; what would you guys do with it ???? My guidelines were to keep it together and not totally tear it down ending up in project construction/ deconstruction jail like most projects. I have rebuilt the carb and fuel pump and installed a new fuel tank and lines. Hopefully that will allow me to get some road time on the motor to evaluate its condition. Its running the flatty with 3 on the column. I would like to get a side view and have you guys photo shop it. Maybe mustard yellow wheels, or Kevin Lee spun disks, what about bias tires, white walls, or the new wite wall radials??? OK, lets let'r fligh!
Cool car. I bought a 46 sedan a couple of weeks ago. Similar shape as yours. I just got the rear main leaf back tonight from the spring shop. Had the eyes reversed. So my plan is to lower the stock suspension and have it pinstriped. Not sure if I will use the 16 inch www or keep the 15 inch radials and get some spun disks for it. I just want a driver. Good luck on yours.
Here's my new '47 with a big thanks to Matthews Garage (Sonny and Tom), Flamin' **** and my oh-so patient girlfriend I just mounted the skirts on Saturday but didn't get pics yet.
I'd slam the rear carv out the rear wheel wells Pie Crust Slicks stack the front up get rid of the hood eddie meyer intake, edelbrock heads, mallory mag, Isky cam, Single loop and a 39 box and run it down the strip. Most of all have fun and do something different. WeedsSpeed.
Here's my 48, and it's a recent purchase. I have given it a thorough tune up, cleaned up the interior. Fixed little things like the dash lights and heater. Installed a seatbelt, and child seat in the back, and we get it out nearly every evening after work, for a cruise with my 2 year old. The above posts are right on, get it running, make it safe, and enjoy. The rest can be worked on it while you enjoy driving it. My plans include new front and rear posies reversed eye springs, and maybe a little body and paint work this winter, then drive the sh!t out of next spring.
Nice car! I would make it road worthy and drive it until the engine falls out. Then start tearing it down if you think it needs that. I went about ten years without a driver. My car sat and sat. Finally I got off my *** and got back into cars now I try to keep one old car around thats drivable while I work on the other projects.
I'd drop it a couple inches front and rear, put on some wide whites and paint the rims a gloss black and drive it. And it is most likey a 47/48 with those parking lights unless someone switched the front sheetmetal, 46 had the rectangular lights above the grille. Bill
damn that thing is bad ***. Its like a 65year old virgin! did you get a good deal? I tend to agree with most people on here too. just get it running good, wax it, new www tires, drop it, clean it up a little and just have it as a kool driviable project.
I agree that its probably a 47/48 unless the fenders have been changed. 47/48 had plain stainless trim, where the 46 has ribbed trim.
Not always. My 47 business coupe has ribbed stainless trim (thats not currently on the car, but going back on soon), and other 47 business coupes I have seen had ribbed stainless. I was told by another 47 owner around my area that they used both stim styles that year, maybe the switched over mid year. Its kind of hard to tell from those pics if there are ribs in that trim, but if it does, maybe they never re-tooled the 46 ribbed trim for the business coupes in 1947-48, since it was a smaller run, and the rear quarter trim was different from any other model.
i would just make it so its drivable and also make sure everything works like the wiring and stuff then start working on the other stuff like putting white walls, and rechroming some parts, then slam it too the ground then start driving it
Thanks for all the replies! I am not an expert on the 46-48's but i am sure i will start paying attention. I dont think it is a 47 because it has lever shocks. I have a 47 axle i thought abought swithing too because it has the stud for the tube shocks and i found a set of up shock mounts at the salvage yard. I better get the vin verified, the ***le states 1946. It is possible the front fenders were changed years ago but i have not had alot of time to totally inspect it. it doesnt look like its been apart. Keep the suggestions coming, its fueling my fire! I do have a set of g78/ 5.60 wide white cokers sitting at the shop i thought about running. I was trying to decide weather to run white or black on the tires??
That's a great looking coupe, I really like the business coupes. I'd put a dropped axle in it, put on some big and little blackwalls or wide whites on steelies with some kind of caps, couple carbs, wax it up an drive it! Oh, and I'd ditch the bumper guards and take off the hood emblems. BTW all the details say it's a '47-48. Does it have a locking steering column? Most '48's don't.
gloss black wheels with '47 caps and trim rings, G78s on the rear, 5.60s on the front, whitewalls, drop the front end, buff the paint and HAVE FUN!
K.I.S.S. is always a good plan! I got confused put the "Stupid" first then "Keep It" second and I'm the "Simpleton" with a long term project
G***ER!!! here is an idea. build it how you want, not how a bunch of freakin guys on the internet tell you to. good luck!
The tube shocks weren't introduced at the beginning of '47, mine's a '47 and it came with lever shocks. Your car is an excellent starting point. I'd just lower it and give it a nice rubber rake with some bias ply www's. Drive and enjoy it, and let it develop over time.
Make It Safe And Driveable Then Buff Out Paint Wide Whites Then Drive The Hell Out Of It And Then You Will Know What You Will Do With It But Most Of All Have Fun With It
Looks like great start! Make it driveable, lower it ( a little nose down stance), bias plys blackwall or ww's, enjoy it!
Nah! Don't listen to anyone else....just give it to me..... Serously, just get it running then drive it 'til you feel it telling you what to do with it..........good luck.
all the 46/47's i've seen had one major difference. the 46's had rectangular directional lights beside the headlights.the 47's had round directional lights below the headlights, like the one on the trailer.i also heard that ithe directionals difference depended on what time of the year that model came off the ***embly line, but don't know if this is true. doesn'r make sense, but who knows
4" dropped axle reversed eye rear spring paint the wheels new cokers drive it for a year and think about your next move, keep it simple and have fun. I did this to a 40 I bought 12 years ago and only made a couple more changes since. headers and dual exhaust. Its going to get a rebuilt flatty this winter. chuck
That's correct, mine's got the '46-style parking lights (they weren't directionals to begin with, but most have been converted since then) but is definitely a 1947. Ford sold every car before it was manufactured back then, they had no need to update their models until they ran out of the old parts.
Well here is an update on my beater since my last post in October. Work includes: king pins, 48 axle w/ tube shock mounts, posies dropped spring & shackles, tie rod ends, brakes etc. 5.50 & 7.00 x 16 Firestones and a set of wheel kid reversed wheels on the back. I havent had time to install the drop rear spring yet. Got my insurance today and hope to get plates by the weekend.
