I just finised the rebuild on the 383 in the elcamino and put a 700r4 behind it......I know for a fact that the tranny worked, me and a buddy pulled it out of his firebird.......I did a intaial TV setting of cable all the way out at full throtal back it off 1/8 in. It would't shift right, shift way too late and very hard. I unhooked the cable and it would shift 1-2-3-4 in about 20mph......I'm pretty sure I don't have the proper TV setting to shift right and was wondering if someone here could tell me or point me in the right direction to set it.

I don't think you back it off any, it should be pulled back out of the lock by pushing on the tab, then pull the throttle wide open and that's it. But that would be assuming that the TV bracket is exactly where it was on the vehicle that it came out of. If not you may have to pull the pan and actually look at where the valve is at in relation to the throttle position.

Save yourself some heart aches. If your throttle cable/TV cable bracket is not made specifically for the carb and manifold you are using, throw it away and get one that is. The bracket to carb relationship is critical on these things for function and long life. As ugly as they are, the stock bracket is worth using if possible.

    I found this site http://www.tciauto.com/Products/Instructions/instructions/gm_tv_cable_adjust.htm

it seems like real good info......I looked up the part # for the bracket system but it seemed to just be a cable.

also I had to make a bracket for the carb because all i could find was universal crome "kick down" brackets.

Don't ask where the old bracket went when it came out of the other car.....I have a feeling that it was thrown away by my buddy.

scotty you have a good idea I don't care if it's ugly I just want it to work......Althou I would't even know where to look for the right bracket.

Search the web for a site called BowTie Overdrives. It is one of the best sites for information and they sell a TV bracket and linkage. They also sell all of the speedo gears to make yours right,

  7. Max extension at max throttle. About 1/4" extension at idle.

do a search there is alot of info here...but here is what I have always done...at full throttle the cable should be all the way out. So just open up the the throttle and tighten cable. Drive the car and ck shifts, if it shift incorrectly dont keep driving. Not sure if this is the most scientific and/or correct way to do it, but it works for me every time

hopes this helps start with the cable adjusted short as possible, move the cable ahead a little at a time untill you get proper shift points. at light throttle opening. try to do this with the rear wheels of the ground jack stands under the rear axles. this will save time by not having to road test each time and it will also prevent damage to trans. if you get the 1/2 shift right all shifts beyond should fall in place.

He's right. You cant just do the out a little at idle and all out at WOT. They have to be perfect and swing the correct arc to work unless you want to just idle and run wide open. Not real convenient...hard to drive that way

Both Holley and Edelbrock make brackets to use their carbs with a 700R4. Not sure about any others. I've got the Holley one and mine worked great with it.
