Along with the rust removal I'm trying to track down oval head stainless screws for all the trim and body parts for a '59 Ranchero. Might have guessed but the screws from the local hardware store are a courser thread pitch than the original steel screws. Does anyone have experience with the vintage suppliers offering the original thread pitch screws in stainless? I can always just crank these in since it's sheet metal backing but I'd rather not.

    Thanks, John

Obsolete and Cl***ic Auto Parts lists trim kits for '59 cars just not Rancheros. Might have to order one for a 2 door. At $19.95 for the kit it doesn't sound unreasonable. IMO

I reused whatever was decent and I had a few boxes of hardware that came in handy. If you don’t find what you need at the link provided above you can search McMaster Carr but hold on to your wallet.

Both good suggestions, thank you. Have the originals soaking in Evaporust and will check on the kit. I know McMaster-Carr isn't cheap, but everything I've ever ordered from them has been top notch and fast shipping. Had to use an impact driver to remove a few but they came out intact.

If you have a bolt company nearby, see what you can find in stainless. I found mine at Amarillo bolt and Supply co.

I find the ones with the attached washers so I don’t chip the paint. I’ve found that the amount of threads per inch or pitch doesn’t make much of a difference. I’m not a purest!

Is there an ACE Hardware in your area? They have a very good selection of stainless steel oval head screws for interior trim.

    And then, there's always this........................

50 years at various stints as a welder, machinist, and diesel mechanic and didn't even think of this. Jesus, must be getting dumber.

Agree, but most of these are countersunk sheet metal so I need the same screws.

That's where the ones I bought came from that I'd prefer not to use, but that ebay link looks interesting.

All good ideas, thank you. I'll check 'em.

I needed a few odd trim screws for my car and Ace had them, in stainless. I brought an old one with me to match it up.
