The Cragars that didn’t fit well on the 57 is what I’m referring to. I did have them sold (sorta). See my long time friend from Jr. High days wanted them and he had the money however they wouldn’t fit his vehicle as well. Which brings me to an idea I had all the while but sat on it until now. Another pair of 15 4 1/2’s are on the way. IMG_4100.jpeg

Why would they fit a 56 and not a 57??

    20mm is all. 56 had/has 255’s vs the 275’s I put on the 57. IMG_1360.jpeg

    Cragars are bitchin'.

But I've got a warm spot for a red '56 Chevy with steel wheels and dog dish hubcaps.
    Yours looks great.

In my humble opinion taking off the steel wheels and putting on cragars will instantly change it from a grandma car to a hot rod

It was tire width and backspacing that bit me on the 57. Started with 4 1/4” back space with 275’s and the tire was an rch from the quarter panel. The 56 has a 255 tire. That makes for a strong 3/8” of clearance using the same 4 1/4” backspace wheel.

Or from a car that was built in the late 70's or early 80's to one that has a early tough no nonsense looks .

I always thought Cragar's were for guys who really wanted polished American Torque Thrusts but did not want the work and up keep and I always got turned off by the rust many Cragars would get that could never be polished out like aluminum or magnesium .
They just have never been a favorite wheel of mine . In the early 80,s most of the all show no go Chevelles in the HS parking lot had Cragars and fake knock offs .

They just never did it for me but hey its not my very beautiful Chevy id love to have so do what makes you happy and not some guy in the interweb. I like the steel wheels on that car in the picture .

I had them on a 69 Chevelle , 70 chevy short bed step side and a Monza and always wanted something else when I had those cars .

So to clarify, just a backspace issue with wider tires, right?

A 255 tire is 10 inches wide on the proper rim and a 275 tire is 10.8 inches wide.
That from this tire size calculator https://tiresize.com/comparison/ That I play with to figure out tire differences.
I first stuck the 70 series in for 255 and 275 15 tires and then did it for 60 series just for grins. Screenshot (1505).png Screenshot (1507).png

    Update

Finally got the front wheels. Long story about back order bs via a vendor a lot of people like to bitch about here. I dropped the order with them. Then sourced these about 30 minutes from the house.

    Sneak peek. 185/80/15 look petty neat on 15 4 1/2’s. IMG_4197.jpeg

    That's what I'm talk'n bout!
My high school 57 was a real tire/wheel "what if" testbed, It had stock steelies, then I put 14x7 Cragars all around on it, even tried some rally wheels, then thought I might go for more of a drag race look.
I had a pair of Keystone 15x4 front runner style wheels that came on the front of my 64 Malibu two door wagon when I bought it, real rare now but I never cared for them much.
A friend of mine knew a guy that had a set of 15x4 Ansen Sprints and wanted my Keystones so made the trade, man, you could steer that thing with one finger.

Beautiful car with steelies or Cragars, but have to run the steelies with the mud grips, the Cragars get rusty in the snow and salt lol
