I am going to get my 40 ford straight axle and split wishbones drilled how many holes and what size? I've seen a bunch done but not sure what people have found works and doesn't work. Do you need to do anything to the bones to stiffen then after drilling? Someone told me buddy he needed to weld in some pipes in the holes on his model A bones or they would split but I think the 35-40 bones are beefier.
When I got ready to drill my axle I used quarters and laid them out across the axle...to determine how many holes and how far apart. That is also the size I used...in two steps.
I think there was a thread not too long back where it was decided that "support tubes" didn't really do much supporting. If you have a tube with thick enough wall to add to the integrity, you've just added more weight than you removed with the holes. Maybe some exhaust tubing just to keep the***** out of the frame. 7/8" hole saw looks to be the perfect size, nice Tommy. J
If your just doing it for the look rather than lightening parts it couldn't hurt to weld in some tube to the bones. I wouldn't want one failing on the street where I could take out others. I believe adding the tube would make it stronger, a mate did this to crane arms he built for a living when he owned a boiler makers shop. If it strengthens a crane arm, wouldn't it do the same to a set of bones?
