My buddy had me repair this hacked up dash for his 32 sedan. It had been butchered, fixed and then re-butchered. He wanted the holes filled and was going to use the insert to ****e it up. The insert is for a boat, will post more info on it tomorrow. Anyway I asked if I could recess the insert, he said be creative, so I did. Got lots of pics during the fixin if ya want a tech on it I'll put one up. Anyone got any Ideas what was in the triangular hole??
I'd love a tech article on this subject. I'm just ready to start work on my dash this week, and can use any ideas you want to share. Thanks.
Dropped the dash off today and **** the owner was thrilled with it. I got some pics of his sedan,, well the various parts off it anyway. He works for the powder coater and everything that can be coated has been. The firewall is just about finished and will be coated as well. The body is coated and he's gonna paint over it. No rust ever! The wheels aren't staying it gets a set of steelies, 327 motor, although he would like to have a nailhead, 200r4 trans. Gonna be a sweet ride.
A 57 has one big bullet in the center and 2 small ones on either side. **** though it might be from a Plymouth but we never saw what was in it. Would like to know what it looked like with it in,, may have been cool. This dash was stick welded, brazed, and a heavy dose of lead to smooth it out. I put in front of the salamander for a bit and blew the lead out with an airhose. Used a grinder to clean it the rest of the way.
That dash is cherry I thought you said it was butcherd. You did a nice job. A little mist of Z- chrome and that will be smooth as a babys bottom.
If this thing was cherry I'd like to see one that is F' ed up!! The hole has the point to the top, putting the 57 piece upside down. I'll get a tech deal put together in the next couple days.
I'm just finishing up another one similar to the first one, figured i'd do a little update. Here's a before shot, notice the lack of screws. It was welded in all the way across the top, and for the front and ends they put the screws in then welded the screws to the dash. Getting it out was a chore and a half. Both ends got replaced, and while I was at it I closed up the gaps for a better fit. The new column drop doesnt touch the dash so I patched up that area too.
I made a new top for it that eliminated the seam, its getting a heater and defroggers so the pinch weld and seam were in the way. It was also butchered beyond repair after cutting the dash from the car. I added some louvers for the defrosters. And moved the headlight and ignition switches under the dash and then made a nifty cover for them, I used drawer pulls for knobs and cut the key down and stuck it in a pull as well. The other side is getting the same cover and such only it will be for 12 volt outlets, with the same pulls. Hopefully this help some of ya, and inspires some copying!
nice work, and just the inspiration I need I have two hacked up '32 closed car dashes I want to make one out of and put it in my '30 Coupe question; notice the upper reveal on the two, one is an "innie" and one is an "outie" can someone tell me what these came from?
Paul, both those dashes could be saved. Not much wrong with either one to warrant butchering it to save the other. They are both regular closed car (non-3-window) dashes. The innie is early 32, and the outie is later 32.
