Art & Inspiration vacuum cleaner paint sprayer

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by s.e.charles, Jun 16, 2025.

  1. Yup, I painted a couple of cars back in the late '60s with a vacuum cleaner sprayer. Worked OK, all things considered. I bet I still have that sprayer or one like it but I also have better equipment today. I certainly wouldn't use one today.

Friend did his 70’s Grand Prix with Kirby vacuum cleaner. The finish was rough. Better results with a brush.

The latest cheap paint setup I see lately on the internet is electric spray guns. Might be worth a try.

  5. Did my '40 coupe bright yellow in 1958, synthetic enamel. Everything in the garage was covered in yellow overspray including the vacuum. Mom was not impressed.

hey i did a '58 beetle like that in high school. 1969 i was working at the local sherwin williams store and they got a new rental spray gun & tank compressor. bought some orange industrial enamel and went to town. tires, weatherstripping, running boards. damn that was a sharp looking ride.

no one would believe my father let me do that in the garage. i honestly think he was too embarassed to be pizzed off.

    farkin' hippies, eh?

Back in the 90s I paint several cars with a Wagner pro because I didn't have access to a booth my brothers and I chipped in on it. We fitted a pro gravity gun on it the thing worked great but it's a whole different animal as it uses warm dry air.

I used to have the complete set of spray equipment for a Kirby vacuum in the original cardboard display box that hung on the wall in my grandad's basement shop. All the accessories were made of maroon Bakelite. Sold it at a garage sale when I bought a new house.

A guy who used to belong to my Studebaker chapter (he's passed away now) painted his Studebaker with a vacuum spray rig. It only blew about 20 psi, so the finish was kind of satiny instead of shiny. Of course, that might be because he didn't spray any clear on top of the baby blue.

    Anyway - that stuff existed...

any time (my other hobby) i have ever mentioned "model railroading or trains" stories come flying out of the woodwork. 'my friend, when i was seven, one christmas - et cetera'.

apparently vacuum spray painting is the new "model trains."

    carry on.

Shot some primer on my first car that way. Rescued from a back yard with surface rust on the hood and top from tree dropping sap on it. 46 Chev 2dr sedan. Dad and I put new rings in it, removed some rod shims to tighten them, I sanded most of the rust off and grabbed Mom's vacuum. Got my license and drove it year or so, but the primer never fell off so guess it works.
