I let a 12 year old girl drive my Model A 14 years ago. now she wants her own Model A. We are building one for her. I met her when she was 6. Now her 6 year old daughter is telling me she wants to drive my 39 Ford when she is 12

    Hello,

When I met my wife in college, she was driving a funky old 1962 Corvair Coupe. It started, ran as well as it could and got my wife to work and to college on time. So, there is nothing bad about that. But, sheesh, it was a Corvair…. Yikes.

Then she got in the 65 El Camino and for the next 10 years, we both put on 100k miles of road trips and summer vacations all over the West coast and into Baja Mexico. It was safe to visit down to about 100 miles South past the border crossing. Today, not so much, that a warning for the public has been posted nationally.

She drove the El Camino any time and had fun doing that. It certainly was better than plodding up a hill with the Corvair or not having to hope that it will get you to work or college… So, after we got married, she was the primary driver in the 65 El Camino.

She was not from hot rod background, so when we both decided to get a nice hot rod project for us, she was all in with enthusiasm. It must have been the nice husband that made it sound like driving in hot rod was much better than the ****py designs from the factory blobs at the time of the late 60s to the late 70s.

Plus, the added thing was both cars were paid off and that was a great thing for young 20 somethings. But, I was given the Corvair to make sure it ran right and then as the El Camino drove away, I had to go to places with the funky Corvair Coupe. Even in the rain when the water came flowing into the cab. YIKES!

As we got the 327 powered 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery project started, she was all supportive as it had our first custom upholstery bucket seats and yes, A/C. So, she was in the garage doing odd and ends to help out getting the project ready for safe driving.

Eventually, after the 327 powered sedan delivery was up and running well, it was difficult to get her out from behind the steering wheel. Although it drove and handled well, she just liked driving it almost everywhere she had to go, shopping, visiting friends, and family. She even drove it 60 miles back to our mom’s house in the Westside of Long Beach for a nice dinner and visit many times. The only thing she did, but was leery of the surroundings was the dark night and the blind spot on the right rear quarter panel.

So, she kept her driving to the day light and hoped to be able to see on that side of the blind spot. YRMV

    Note:

If we had kept the 327 powered Ford Sedan Delivery, that would have been great. But, family called and our lives moved on to a new direction with the addition of a little toddler situation. She still has eyes for this model of convertible for her choice of a daily driver. The key being "eyes only..."

or this sedan that was set up exactly the way we “both” like hot rods.

    Yes, SBC and A/C...

    A winning combo. :)
My first wife used to like to borrow my '57 210, with a 283, three on the floor.
Her and her girlfriend used it to stop light race on The Boulevard.
One day she, ( angry that I worked so much, ) came racing up, in her Mom's car, p***ing the station on the side street.
The Avenue had enough crown to launch the car and catch air as she crossed it on the side street.
The side street takes a bend on the other side. While airborne she figured 'time to cut the wheel'.
The landing was not at all pretty.
Hey @jnaki aren't you the guy ;) that always says YRMV?

I taught my 11 year old grandson to drive in my avatar. He’s near 24 now, with his first child on the way. The car had 62-65 Impala SS buckets that were set kinda close, I’m 5’7” and he was tall for his age so it worked out that he didn’t have much trouble reaching the pedals. We have some very fond memories of those times, and he was a quick learner.

My kids aren’t necessarily p***ing the torch yet mainly because my boys don’t have kids yet. But, I am trying with my grandson that is my daughter’s kid.

Young Zander was driving his dad's truck at 10 years old here on the farm, pulling wagons full of hay. He was a little guy. Could barely see out. I could barely see him LOL.
He's 15 now. I'll be 70 years old before I finish my coupe in a couple years. I think Zander might end up banging her gears more than I will.
He'll look a lot better doing it, too.
