SO, weird twist in the Legacy '36 Project: I sent letters to a number of auto upholstery shops, canvassing them for interest in providing quotes to do the interior of the '36. I provided them with a BRIEF, one page synopsis of the history of the project and how I have taken on finishing the car to honor my dad's memory. I got a phone call from John at Ogden Top & Trim, Berwyn, IL. We discussed the project and talked about setting up a meeting. While wrapping it up, John mentions that he found the story of the car "interesting." I thanked him and explained that I provided him with the "Readers Digest" version and proceeded to fill in some of the minor details omitted from the summary. I explained that in 1975, my then 40 year old dad (itching to buy a hot rod project car) took his 17 year old son (me) to a used car lot in Argo known to have an occasional cool candidate for a 'hot rod' project on their lot. John says, "Little Joe's?" Surprised, I say, "Yes." He states that in the past, he had bought a few project cars from the now long defunct used car dealer. I continue to explain how dad and I found a nice '33 Plymouth there that April night in 1975, striking a deal with Little Joe for $550 for the car. But, as I told John, when we came back the next day with the money, they had sold the Plymouth out from under us but offered the '36 Ford Fordor Touring Sedan that had just come in (in fact, it was still on the tow truck) for the same amount. John asks," '33 Plymouth? Was it a coupe? On a frame, not running?" I say, "Yes, it was a coupe, not running." He asks, "Oldsmobile engine?" "I think it was..." I answer, somewhat startled. "I think I'M the one who bought that car." John states. "What year did you say it was?" he asks. "1975." I reply. "That would be about right." John confirms. He goes on to say he never finished the car, eventually selling it to someone else. NOW, is this TRUE? Am I actually talking to THE guy who bought the coupe WE were going to buy in 1975 about upholstering the car we bought instead? I KNOW this: Everything I just relayed to you is TRUE. Is John LYING? I do not believe so. He has nothing to gain from being untruthful. Could he be MISTAKEN? Possibly, although he DID know of Little Joe's Used & Antique Car lot, and I believe he DID purchase a '33 Plymouth coupe from them. Was it the SAME one we almost bought? It would be one hell of a coincidence, but I'd like to think so. Remember, legends are built upon stories, NOT facts. To me, this story is TRUE.
