Stock? Stock?? I thought for a moment there that I logged into the Ford Barn by mistake.
Stock is for making chicken soup! And I don’t like chicken soup!

Thanks, but I was in the market for an engine I could learn on and play with/modify. It's not stock to the Model A anyway, and has been internally modified (cam, etc.) More mods to come before the drive train ends up in something else (hopefully a c-cab delivery).

And I'll let you all know how this distributor works out. I haven't heard anything bad about them. Also the guy I bought the car from is a racer/builder, unlikely he would have bought junk. And if it is, I'll just get a different one.

    Just to be clear....
I’m not against hot rodding a car.
I’m not against hot rodding an engine for performance gains.

Having an engine with no functioning timing advance is not the way.
You would be better off with the engine stock.

I knew what you meant @F-ONE, just funnin with ya.
Fact! Mechanical advance or vacuum or both, but not any for a street driven car.
I run mechanical advance only on 3 of my rigs at the moment, including my flathead. Decent mileage per gallon and good performance. Your results may vary, driver on closed course.

I'm kinda with @Bandit Billy on this. Vacuum over mechanical is not really necessary for our cars and the way we drive them. Basically, all it does is provided more advance during periods of high vacuum during cruise, which really isn't that important on a "Hot Rod".

But since it isn't stock, and can't be made stock without a complete teardown and retrofit of electrical parts and cam...

    Small update:

I looked at the hei distributor - good news and some minor bad news.

While the prior owner installed the vacuum advance, he didn't remove the installed springs and bushings for the mechanical advance, hence, it's has a usable mechanical advance. The bad - he didn't include the other springs and bushings or the vacuum block off plate. However, TSP is sending me a full set and the plate. So, when I'm ready to try it out, I'll be able to adjust the curve any of about 12 ways. That will happen after I get an alternator for it. Since I've never monkeyed with mechanical advance settings before, it'll be fun to experiment.
