I saw this ad on Craigslist and thought it was interesting enough to share here. This is not mine and not exactly local to me. “1954 Ford dealership see-through hood” https://newhaven.craigslist.org/pts/d/new-haven-1954-ford/7831128701.html
Definitely interesting, but more for the man or woman who has everything I think. The hood that came with my Ranchero has some see through options, but not in a good way.
I've seen one 54 Skyliner with the see-through hood. It was a US car here in Canada. Quite the novelty, not sure if it's in my top ten though!
From what I have read the "gl*** top" was a first time option in 1954 as was the Y-Block. Ford sent every dealer a "gl*** top" hood to put on the car in the showroom, preferably a matching see through roof car. Must have been quite a crowd pleaser in 1954! Mark
Not sure if what I heard is correct or not but I was told they were only for display purposes and the dealers were supposed to replace the see through with a solid hood in the event the car was sold.
I am pretty sure if someone walked into the dealer with cash and the hood was a deal maker/breaker it would go with the car. I worked in a Ford dealership in the 70's and you wouldn't believe the parts swapping that took place to sell a car. I remember swapping a complete interior from one Ford Pinto to another because the lady wanted tan seats in a car with an exterior color that tan wasn't offered with.
I have seen several cars with the gl*** top & gl*** hood at a few 1954 Ford Club of America conventions over the years, They make a statement but I wouldn't want the hood, but I considered adding the gl*** top to our Ranch Wagon but seeing how much work would be involved I decided it wasn't worth the effort.
