Hey all, I’m having trouble finding any part suggestions or repair tips on the upper lip of the body on my ‘29 roadster. I’m sure there is information out there about replacement or repair, but I’m having trouble finding anything because I am unsure of what to call this section. A picture would help. Don't know how you posted what you did, but when I clicked on it, the message was that I can't access it.
https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/searchm.htm?type=merged&sterm=ModelA&searcht=body+panel "Upper lip" could be under the windshield, top of the door, top of the quarter panel, the 'tulip' or 'dutchman' panel between the quarters.
Upper lip? You gotta keep that sucker stiff.... Welcome to the HAMB by the way. We are tough love, we tease you a bit, but then we help you. -Abone.
This is the panel between the 2 quarter panels. https://brookvilleroadster.com/products/1928-29-ford-model-a-roadster-above-the-deck-lid-panel Now that the pic shows, it looks like it's the top of the quarter. The bottom is more often rotten and has patch panels. The top area is often handmade.
Thanks. I’ve been lurking for a long time. I know what to expect. Also, this is my first rod after years of being in the muscle car space. I’ve got thick skin.
@Aaron Blount we have a secret section (shhh!) for Off Topic stuff that you might be able to provide experience in.
If it’s the bit behind the seats it’s a belt rail or tack rail https://www.oneillvintageford.co.uk/acatalog/model-a-ford-body-channels.html
Some parts of this nature are sometimes called "unobtainium"! Welcome from Va. What sort of Tech do you teach?
So you're from Indy and don't know what it is? Wow. It's an indee panel. It goes in in dee back of the seat and in dee front of the decklid. I've already covered gozintas and gozontas in a previous session
Thanks. I’ll talk to my mythicalium dealer and see what he’s got laying around. I teach automotive at Lincoln Tech. Luckily we’ve also got an amazing collision and welding department that are always willing to help me out when I get stuck.
Lucky you! That is probably a good thing, it looks like the help here is coming up a bit short. It appears you may not be the only guy that doesn't know what that section is called. Imagine the poor soul that went through the effort it create the part, then found the actual name for it, but no one is buying his parts, because they don't know what he is selling!
@gene-koning it's like food. English is not always the same as American, let alone French! https://www.foodandwine.com/lifestyle/15-foods-us-and-uk-call-different-names Same thing with coach work morphing into auto styling, which also changed over the decades. Did you notice what Brookville called it in the link? They say a picture is worth a thousand words. His post picture cleared it up.Your seller should do the same!
If you're trying to buy new sheet metal for the part on the sides, it's called "the top of the quarter panel", and isn't sold separately from the rest of the quarter panel. The bottom rusts away, so they sell smaller patch panels for that.
if your's is beyond repair you might source out a donor quarter panel. a rusted bottom panel with better top might be just the ticket.
Looks like somebody shortened the tulip panel and moved the top edge of the quarter panel opening to the rear as well. But was unsuccessful in the needed patch and welding. I recommend looking at Bennett Customs YouTube videos for his performance of this operation, but in a highly successful manner.
I don't know are you going to be able to handle it I mean you muscle car guys get anal over, over spray being in the correct spots, a hot rod on the other hand is pretty much just the opposite other than it has four wheels and generally goes fast.
