Couple of knick knacks before this roof cutting party. The FlamedAbone Pretty Much Universal Steering Column Drop Kit. (tm)

    red346-16-25-1.jpg

The stock dash puts the speedo just a bit too far left to be centered with the steering wheel.

    red346-16-25-2.jpg

    Not moving the column, so...

    red346-16-25-3.jpg

If you move the dash insert, then you have to move the glove box hole or the whole thing will be ass-eyed.

    red346-16-25-4.jpg

And, it's in there. Hard to take a good shot of a dash, so just imagine it looks pretty OK.

    red346-16-25-5.jpg

Speedo is now pretty close enough to dead nuts.

    red346-16-25-6.jpg

The old alternator bracket was bugging the shit out of me. I got it down nice and low, but I was going to have to run an electric fuel pump, which I am not a huge fan. So, I built another set up that allows the stock pump and the alternator to co-exist.

    red346-16-25-7.jpg

Up a bit higher than the old one but it misses the pump by a good bit.

    red346-16-25-8.jpg

Fortunately, that ugly bastard is pretty much covered by the fender apron.

    red346-16-25-9.jpg

I think that's it. Next pics should be topless.

Ass eyed is a term I have never heard. Very funny!
Your fixes are far from ass eyed.
Nice solution to the dash and alternator.

This is fixin to be an ass load of pictures and all of the "don't chop it" guys should turn back now.

    red347-6-25-1.jpg

Somewhere along the line, the roof got a fake soft top kit.

    red347-6-25-2.jpg

Held on by 76, 843 rivets.

    red347-6-25-3.jpg

    Pretty decent roof opening underneath.

    red347-6-25-4.jpg

    Last chance...spoiler alert...

    red347-6-25-5.jpg

Modern 2 inch tape doesn't measure 2 inches anymore, so you have toss in a little pinstripe tape or you might end up with a sissy chop rather than the 4 big ones.

    red347-6-25-6.jpg

There are lots of different ways to cut a 34 and lots of fancy ways to do the rear window, but I'm a bit of a caveman, so there you go, right through the middle.

    red347-6-25-7.jpg

    Way better already.

    red347-6-25-8.jpg

There are a couple ways to do the quarter window and this is the point where you have to make a choice. For this chop, I lined up the very rearmost edge of the roof.

    red347-6-25-10.jpg

That method, like all the rest has some consequences. Now your B pillar doesn't line up.

    red347-6-25-9.jpg

But here is where the magic happens. Looks like a bold move, but it is actually pretty simple.

    red347-6-25-12.jpg

See, that wasn't that bad after all.

    red347-6-25-13.jpg

And that gets the rear section in its new forever home.

    red347-6-25-14.jpg

Here is one I didn't see coming. The stock roof had a pretty big gap between the A pilar and the door top, but when I lined up the roof forward and the door backwards, it made it ever bigger. Yikes!

    red347-6-25-15.jpg

Moved a chunk of the roof and added a bit to the leading edge of the door top and she's all better.

    red347-6-25-16.jpg

This style of chop leaves the roof body line a bit goofy.

    red347-6-25-17.jpg

Cut that sucker out and move it forward.

    red347-6-25-18.jpg

The rear window gets a bit buck toothed.

    red347-6-25-19.jpg

Same deal, cut out a skooch it over.

    red347-6-25-20.jpg

Some of you sharp eyed HAMBers noticed the passenger door was a '33.

    red347-6-25-21.jpg

    Now identifies as a '34.

    red347-6-25-22.jpg

    Tacks ground.

    red347-6-25-24.jpg

    Finished 1/4 window.

    red347-6-25-25.jpg

Everything needs finish welding and a bit more metal work, but this is the general idea.

    red347-6-25-26.jpg

    Done for the day.

    red347-6-25-27.jpg

    3/4 front.

    red347-6-25-28.jpg

Everybody has their own opinion on what a chop should look like, but this one ended up about right for what I was going for.

    red347-6-25-29.jpg

    Next up, garnish moldings.
    See ya, -Abone.

Dan it is very handy that you popped into this thread. For those that don't know, our very own Lo C Dan is the baddest ass louver guy in the country. Fortunately, he is only an hour and change from me in Lexington SC. Look him up, he's a bad mofo and his louvers are perfect. His louvers are the only straight thing on the car.

Plenty solid chop right there! I really like them with the door windows reasonably parallel. When the tops and the bottoms of the windows start going at different angles to each other it kinda starts looking wonky to me. Nice job!

Nicely done! Not that its worth anything, for a 3W I love seeing the windscreen laid back, on 5W this way looks better to me. Excellent! Was worth the wait to see this done!

Beautiful! The chop looks suspiciously like the 554 Fuel Coupe's.:cool::cool::cool:

Gotta chop it enough that you don't mistake it for a Plymouth, right?

The hero part of the chop gets done in a weekend and you stand back and think about how cool you are. But, there is another good three or four weekends of mindless tiny patch panels, meticulous welding, grinding and shaping. Some of it, like the roof skin and garnish moldings aren't too horrible, so here they are in all their mediocre glory.

A 1995 Caprice gave its one and only roof to live on in something a bit cooler.

    red348-10-25-1.jpg

Trim it just a tiny bit larger than the hole.

    red348-10-25-2.jpg

Weld that bitch in there. Yea, I know the hard core traditionalists will accept nothing but an original roof, but I did that on the last one and will again on the next one. Just not this one.

    red348-10-25-3.jpg

A kind HAMBer from Cleveland, Ohio came across with a nice new windshield frame.

    red348-10-25-4.jpg

On to the pile of garnish moldings.

    red348-10-25-5.jpg

The 1/4 window moldings are extras from my old '36 coupe, which are pretty close. I'm sure there is a '36 guy cursing my name right now. Real sorry.

    red348-10-25-7.jpg

    See? Fits right in there.

    red348-10-25-8.jpg

I like to cut the door garnish at the corners.

    red348-10-25-9.jpg

If you do it right, it leaves a pretty simple seam in case you are heading to the chrome shop with them.

    red348-10-25-10.jpg

    Don't forget the rear window.

    red348-10-25-12.jpg

Same pile of moldings, all just 4 inches smaller.

    red348-10-25-13.jpg

And here is today, all garnished up and a windshield that cranks out. Not sure what is next. Probably something.

    red348-10-25-14.jpg

    See ya, -Abone.

Headlights next. The headlight placement on a 34 is so important, and easy to get wrong.
