The trunk emblem is a SBC V8 emblem, which makes sense because the car is just a regular Impala and not a SS.

There is the key in aces. It wasn't one that a dealer would order out to put in the showroom. one might get ordered for a dealer's wife who got her hands on the order book but that is doubtful. Remembering that in the early 60's though the mid 70's the best car to buy was the dealer's wife' demo because that car had been sorted out to the Nth degree before she took it and was usually a very pristine low mile car when she turned it in for the next one and it usually had all the bells and whistles.
I've seen a number of 409 4 speed Station wagons and used to have to race against one or actually loose to one in G/stock in 1969 in Texas that had the back side window covered with national event win stickers and held the record we were running on a time or two. That thing would eat my lunch and keep the sack.
The 61 Impala 2 door hard top is one of the best looking Chevys ever built in my book but I don't ever remember seeing a real super sport in person. That includes going to some events where the rich and famous show up with what they will feel is the most interesting car in their collection for the folks at that event. That car was actually an Allard that a gent who is a Microsoft billionaire showed up at the Henry's Haulers events in the 80's with open exhaust and the car was a survivor. No one would have paid much attention to one of his Ferrari's but that car drew attention.

Damn now this has me wanting to look for a 71 Impala.

Just went through all 13 pages
I don’t have any pictures or recollections of a 1961 Chevrolet 4 door Impala SS
    but
I do have a couple thoughts

This thread is much like the movie, Groundhog Day
    and
If offered today, the Impala SS would only be offered in a 4 door
    Oh ya

I have a 96 SS, would be neat to have a 61 parked next to it!

So after 13 pages the thought is it was advertised but never built? What a let down. The four door hardtop would have been a cool car.

im too busy messing with my bubbletop to look for a 4 door, lol. Trying to have it ready to get on the road this weekend, finally.

but even without finding a 4 door Super Sport, it would be just as rare to find a higher horsepower big block 4 door. That would be rare in itself as well.

I still don't think its a big stretch to grasp the possibility of at least one order being placed for a four door SS.
Hell, even someone thought a 1962 two/four 409/4speed BelAir wagon would be cool!

I don't think the option wound up being factory orderable.

IIRC that wagon was used by a racing team.

I think the idea got to the final check before it got axed. Similar to the tri power option that was coming to super sport 350 camaro's in 67. Prototypes and all the drawings where done and added to the assembly manuals, but then was cut at the last minute. So all the paperwork is there that it "could" have happened, but never did.

I was wondering the same thing Mr. Denny; I’ve been very interested in this topic but unfortunately I don’t have anything to contribute. I’m just here to learn. If anyone else does please post.
Has this thread run its course possibly? I hope not.

I am kinda surprised no one has even done a tribute/clone or however you want to call it of this car out of a plain 4 door hardtop.

Well, It's not like I didn't throw out the challenge, and here's the thing, I think that most EVERYTHING else has been given a "tribute" of sorts, definitely would wake up those that have never heard of this unicorn.
