How come all the great car magazines were forced off the market and newsstands and out of our mailboxes. I wanna kick some publishing ass over this ^%$=up!!!!!!!!!! I knew when it did but damn me, if ever figured out these two imbecilic reasons. (~!@#$% idiots)
The internet is GREAT for many things hot rod oriented...but magazine survival wasn't one of those things.
1. Take any point you want a long time back. Take the price of a mag at that time. Put it into your favorite inflation calculator. They were required to keep the price lower. 2. Pressure from other media (that thing you are asking the question on is the big one) on current events, advertising, builds and niche info. 3. With success comes a widening of focus. Anything from gokarts and models to vans and pro touring. 4. Pressure from advertisers caused the editorial to become part of the sales (Chassis Buyer's Guide being a 3rd of the mag, suspiciously the same Co.s that advertise). 5. Losing long time readers (how many budget SBC builds can you offer, or aging out) and trying to appeal at the same time to new readers (What Those Numbers On the Tire Mean!).
So let me take a stab at what you both above are getting at ??????????????. ................................................................................................ Its progress stupid, progress. Blame Bill Gates, Paul, Allen and the hundreds of millions of their prodigies/geniuses that changed the world and society along with the real fool,(and may I say IDIOT) who pushed and created the cell phone? OKAY I stretched that just a bit but I got in my major bitchs anyway. Wait there's more. Ryan surely had no idea he was replacing, Hot Rod, Car Craft. Rodding & Restyling, Rod & Custom, etc. when creating the H.A.M.B. but that is where we are?? I like the hell out of his creation, BUT sitting down in my man cave, or by my fireplace by a fire with my favorite adult drink and the current monthly copy of R&C beats hellout of looking a glearing screen for hours! Well I suposse I' not making much sence to the major portion of you much younger HAMBERS, so I'll just give it up. How old Am I? I'll be attending my 79th Class reunion this Sunday. Larry I agree with your thoughts on the old magazines, I love to sit in my recliner and read. I love the HAMB and visit almost daily. I just wish we had the mags in addition to this sight. Flipping through a magazine is on a different emotional plane that I’m not smart enough to explain. One of my plans is to buy HR, PHR and other magazines starting from day one and read them all. Maybe purchase 12 or 24 at a time and sell or trade for the next set. I recently did this with some old TV shows Perry Mason, Andy Griffith, Barney Miller. Much better shows than the newer stuff IMO. There was a time, when telephones were strictly an item that was connected to a land line, and it stayed inside of the house, at that time there was a long phone cord you could purchase, that allowed you to take the hand set, into another room, but that was about it. During that same time period, there were things known as pay telephone booths, and they all had, or did have a big phone book in them. The phone book was rarely left in tact, it suffered the revenges of weather, and the occasional drunk that was pissed off and tore it to shreds, etc, etc, etc . Now a days, its virtually impossible to find a yellow pages phone book that is current, because with the advent of the Smartphone, there isn't any need for a yellow pages phone book, unless you find one that is being used to prop up a leg on an unbalanced chair leg or bench. I have thrown many an out of date Yellow pages phone book in the trash, now a days when I want to decorate some of my packages, it would have been great to use a few pages out of the yellow pages to use as decoration, along the lines of being a totally creative prankster, with evidence of the way it used to be a long time ago! They just aren't printed or published anymore. And for good reason. As much as I always loved magazines of all topics, so many of them are not printed anymore because of cost, and a lot of other parameters that have contributed to their demise! I wished I would have saved all of the MAD Magazines I bought as a kid.

I also liked reading publications focused on my interests, usually written by a handful of like minded people who did the work, researched and proof read it before publishing. What we are conversing on (HAMB) lacks some of that, but also gives more people who wouldn't be heard a voice, for good and bad. It's also immediate. Changing of the Guard? Today's youth have mostly abandoned the auto; consider how many you may personally know that prefer the latest I Phone to literally even getting a driver's license?! Inflation, not enough shop classes or elders taking youth under their wings to learn rodding basics.... I question how silly this may sound, but how long will/can the hobby of rodding and customizing spread and continue with so few magazines in the US printed to spread enthusiasm or share ideas? Not everyone can travel to the Autorama's, or Roadster Shows across this nation, except by these damned device's so currently making print media obsolete. I almost consider these days a "new" Malaise era, with just Mustang and Corvette being the factory muscle alone, and consider how many pickup trucks/ SUV's outnumber sedans, wagons..etc...

I always had trouble with spelling, looks like I'll go out that way. Engineers can be notorious for their lack in doing so.

With the invention and implementation of AI, you might see a revival of printed media and texts. Those who control the internet through the use of their AI, have been slowly reshaping history. Not so much the history of our hobby, at least not yet. But if you google facts that you know were true, you will frequently find them rewritten with artificial facts littering the history of. If you didn’t live it how would you know it’s true? It will only get worse. Once an article is printed, it is actually safe as long as someone has a copy.
Orwell's 1984 talked about rewriting history. Yep, I can see day when print media will be banned. That's why I still buy old magazines.
