Hi, We are looking for 2 QUALIFIED Judges for our September 7 Car and Motorcycle Show, held in Saddle Brook,NJ This is a well established show with a average of 150-160 cars in attendance every year. Our last 2 Judges moved out of state and we are now 2 Judges down. Please NO WANNA BE'S , you MUST be a well rounded person, with knowledge of Street Rods, Muscle Cars, Cl***ics,Pro-Touring, Antiques and every other kind of car that shows up. And be able to judge fairly all the cars. You MUST be able to work with the other Judges. Since this is a charity event where ALL the profits go to charity,we cannot pay you, but you will get a Judges T-Shirt and the satisfaction of knowing that your work will benefit, the Saddle Brook Girl Scouts, Saddle Brook Boys Scouts and Our Lady of Mount Virgin Church. If you feel your the person to help us out, e-mail me and we'll talk
At our car show, (350-400 cars) we solved the judges problem years ago by having participants do the judging. Each entrant gets a voting ballot at registration and chooses their favorite car (by car number) in 3 different cl***es (ballots are alternately handed out as cl*** 1-2-3, cl*** 4-5-6, cl*** 7-8-9 etc)....and then they get their dash plaque when they turn their ballot in. The car number that gets the most votes in their cl*** get the 1st place, second most votes gets 2nd place etc.
One of the problems we have, believe it or not, is there are only 8 people on our show car committee!! We are stretched very thin during the show, and another thing we usually have close to 50 trophies to give out. That's how we make a big portion of our profits. Last year went very smooth with 3 Judges.
Yeah, but that means that the participants will only get mad at each other instead of club members/judges....we are off the hook...cuz there is ALWAYS somebody who is mad about not winning a trophy.
Sounds like there needs to be some scaling back, 50 trophies!!! I've never really understood the whole trophy chasing mentality, Shows should be about getting out with fellow minded folk to enjoy our rides and show the public what is still out there. I kinda agree with the 'Peoples Choice' approach for at least one award it gets attendees involved and making the most of the whole show. At my club's show we only give out three awards, Peoples Choice, Best American and Best of the Rest, as its in conjunction with an all day music event we normally get one of the staff from that to pick the winners. If we have a club member over from an international chapter then we get them to pick. So far we have been lucky and all the winners have been genuinely shocked and nice folks to boot.
150 cars and 50 trophies. Just pick every third car. Peoples choice piss most people off around here. Can't please everyone. Trophies hunter are the worst.
Why not eliminate judging and just give every entrant a dash plaque at registration table? That way nobody gets upset. Everyone wins. Trophies are just dust collectors.
My "favorite" is the best engine award. Typically goes to the SBC with the most billet, chosen by someone's niece.
A simpler version. 2 of the members of our club run smaller shows (100-200 cars) for their local fire depts. They use the same "3 cl*** ballot" as mentioned above, except it's just a "3 car ballot" and they give out "top 25" trophies for the top 25 vote getters....no cl***es...much simpler
"Au contraire"! During the 1980's our club (Cl***ic Cruisers) hosted many big car shows with over 150 cars in South Florida. Folks didn't mind getting dash plaques as we gradually phased out trophies and judges. The only people who complained were the Corvette owners -many of whom are trophy hounds.
What's your judging criteria? Are you going off ISCA type sheets? Or just whatever floats the judge's boat? I'm involved in a couple of clubs that hold shows every year (30+ years for each) and one thing we've learned is avoid awarding 'Best' trophies as that's the can with the most worms. Instead, we hand out 'favorite' awards in the various categories, reserving 'Best' for original/restored stockers and modified cars, one each. And nobody gets more than one trophy... We also try very hard not to have repeat winners in a given category in consecutive years. Peoples/Participants choice trophies are another can of worms as ballot box stuffing can be a real issue. Long distance is another one. We had a guy who bought a local car online, then flew in from back east and tried to claim that. No matter what you do, some trophy ***** will almost always end up pissed off.
we try and sell as many trophy's as we can, THAT'S where we make most of our money. There is NO corporate sponsors. We've been shifting from traditional trophy's to 8 x 10 plaques which people seem to like better, you can hang them up. Thank's for the input guys. we've just acquired another judge, so one more to go..
When Hellbent-Hoods had the 30 Birthday show this April. We did Best Hot Rod, Best Kustom, Best Bike, and then there was 2 local clubs that presented awards, and 1 builder award from a local shop. It seem to go well, when it was over the over arching theme was home built drivers.
Yep.... This club has an open entry format, you can bring almost anything to this show. The original/restored stock category has seen everything from a fully restored 1922 Moon Sedan to a survivor '64 Buick Le Sabre hardtop win. Same goes for the 'Best' modified trophy, the only major difference in judging was it couldn't be stock. Build quality and execution became more important. This particular show gets around 200 cars. The other one I'm involved in used to get the same, but the city reworked the park we used about eight years ago and broke up the space making it unusable. The club finally got a decent space at a local church last year and going forward after trying shadeless school parking lots and fields with dead gr***.
Not sure about selling the trophies. Does a sponsor pay for their name on the different trophies? Do you charge spectators ? Couple bucks a head or by donation might make a difference. I know it doesn’t address your question.
One of the biggest problems had with the car show I started at my local club was the judging! I could not find anyone to do it! So, I had to go to voting and that got messed up! It sounds simple, but even voting for cars can be a nightmare! Judges can be braised , voting can get stuffed, participation “ trophies” are good! Good luck! Bones
well you all can rest eazy, we've got three judges. LOL!! one of the members of the show car committee got them. I know one of them he owns a local body shop and does impeccable work, the other two I have no idea who they are or their credentials. We'll see.
So any explanation of the selling trophies part? You give out lots of trophies so that more cars will register? I am always looking for an innovative way around the car owner providing the show and paying for the privilege.
Show & Shines in our local area, trophies and awards are mostly given by " Sponsor Awards". Local businesses donate the cost of the award to be given. The business will have their name on the award. RE: First Place, Sponsored by Joes Pub. I have never heard the term used "Buying & Selling Awards"!
we charge the sponsors of a trophy $100.00 they get there name on the trophy as a sponsor. It costs us approximately $30.00 for the trophy $70.00 goes to our car show to be distributed to our charities. The entry fees also go the car show , and that is also added to the pot. along with 50/50 and raffle proceeds. This is how we make our money. It would be nice if we got a corporate sponsor for the show, but that ain't happening, but not for lack of trying. Hope that clears that up for you
