A couple of 55 chevys i remember from the old SS&DI mags in the 70/80s that i never forgot; Bob Bunkers' FOLSOM FLASH, and Nick Iarussos' GODZILLA.
As a kid I always liked Willie’s Pie Wagon and Johnny Loper’s Lil Hoss. Both Anglias (Thames). Seen around LA years ago was a sedan delivery lettered with; Miracle Pies - if it’s a good pie, it’s a Miracle.
May be a little bit OT (but there is a race number on the grid ) but I really love this one. Every time I see this picture, I remember Stirling Moss, who I was chatting with on the pre-grid at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (where he was still racing the hill climb even though he was old and a bit tired) when a man asked him why he was still doing that. He laughed and replied "for the girls of course!". His wife, who was also there, laughed even harder
Spoke to Bob a while ago. He has a fire-breathing grey motor being built to go back into the Captain Cheers, Harv
This is my cousin, Russell and his "girl friend of the week", he had pretty good luck with the ladies although not so much with the ones he married My uncle told the story of driving down main street in Atlantic Iowa (population about 7500) and while stopped at the traffic light a sweet young thing opened the door to the "Smooch Shop" and jumped in. She was as surprised as he was, she thought it was Russell, Uncle Billy wasn't quite who she was interested in. RIP Russell and Uncle Billy. Billy loved telling that story. No picture but at about the same time there was a early 50's Chevy with "Six Hot Holes" on the side. Seemed a little risque to a 14 ? year old kid at the time
Can’t say what it is on, here, but it had dual wheels and four and a half doors and a ton of Smokey horsepower and could pull a 45 foot gooseneck trailer loaded with Harley’s at 100mph! It had “ Poison Okie” painted on it door! Bones
My favorite was always ""The Scag", Bob McGinley's '32 CA that ran at Minnesota Dragways in the early 60's. Unfortunately, the impact of the whole thing has been ruined by the fact that "The Scag" has a remarkable resemblance to the character "Rocky Dennis" from the movie "Mask" that starred Sam Elliott and Cher. This ruins the whole effect. I'll bet most people these days don't even remember the term or it's meaning. The supreme insult to any pubescent high school girl.
@Gruntis I have some more pictures in the attic, need to have them all enhanced. One of these days I’ll gather up everything on the boat and do a thread on the antiquated forum. The only physical thing left of the boat is the prop which I have hanging in the garage. Dan
i had a '53 chevy, and i would drink anything as long as it was beer. called that car The "Six Pack"!
I remember a pair of race boats in the late fifties (can't remember if they were cracker boxes or flat bottoms) at Marine Stadium in Long Beach: "Damnifino and Damnifinoeither".
I once saw a 56 Chevy gasser at Carlsbad with the logo, "My kid's Inheritance" painted down both sides!
Late '70's drag strip on Long Island, NY there was an impossibly perfectly show car painted box Nova with airbrushed sunset desert scenes on it, complete with tumbleweeds and Saguaro cacti. Car's name was "Panama Red" and it was really freaking fast. Me and my pals LOVED it as Panama Red was our leaf of choice back in the day and it was everywhere and cheap. lol. Can't find any pics of the car though. Sorry Andy
I hauled this crazy thing from the original owners in Maryland to its current owner Brian Jaeger in Wisconsin, got lots of thumbs up on road. One cool car. Might be OT if so please delete. Dan
The Hustler, D/Gas 55 Chev raced in the 60's and early 70's by the Hustlers car club from Glendive,MT.
Hello, I have been following the old historic drag race competition since I was a little kid, when we moved to our last Westside of Long Beach house. As we began to get interested, those little magazines played a big part and then it was the local drag news weekly paper that continued to keep our interest. My brother was interested in two things. A daily driver hot rod he could race and drive to school. His friend had a 1934 5 window Ford Coupe with a big Oldsmobile motor that did both. So, my brother got that feeling when he drove around with his friend. By the time he was ready to get into building a Model A Coupe with a Paxton Supercharged SBC motor, he also wanted to have an open Modified Roadster. Our Model A Coupe would have a 10% set back, where as the modified roadster would have a 25% set back for the competition scene. At the time we were ready to start the gas coupe build, his roadster thoughts were waning, since I could not drive it to school or the teenage hangouts. So, the gas coupe it was for our first build. I had no say in the decision, except for the find of the old Model A Coupe that we sold and now, the 40 Willys Coupe I found on the way to school, too. Jnaki So, our roadster would have looked like the blue roadster below, except for a Paxton Supercharged SBC motor, in our initial design or hopes for the build. One of my favorite builds on a Modified Roadster class race car. One of the first Modified Roadster is this colorful photo of a sectioned modified roadster. But, it was owned by Bob Sefton from Arizona It was beautiful candy blue. "Lil Miss Carriage," was competing at the 1956 NHRA Nationals. He ran a 331" 6 carb Chrysler in this beautifully engineered roadster. Bob was based in Arizona, and ran a hotel there. Sadly he lost his life in a boating accident, and the roadster sat untouched in a garage for a long time. The engine was rescued, but the car was beyond saving.
