"Hot Rod" books you read as a kid

I was at the Sema show several years ago and Felson had a small both in the Foyer. Iwas able to buy a complete set of his books and each one is autographed to me. I caught him when no one was at his booth and had a fantastic conversation then! I treasure that signed match set from him!

 

Glad you brought this back up. For me the only Schoolastic Book Mobile book I have is Dirt Track Summer by William Campbell Gault, early 60s. I’m not sure when it was published, I got it when I was about 10 years old. 35 cents! But the first book I got was a Christmas present from 1958, The Observer’s Book of Automobiles. And it has pretty much every car manufacturer from around the world in it, from A.C. to Zundapp (that u has 2 dots over it, it’s a German company). The car that caught my interest and still does, even though I could never afford it, is a Nardi, a little Italian barchetta powered by, are you ready for this, a Crosley ohc 4. Here it is:


I was just 4 years old, been a car nut ever since.

 

The paperback novel Hot Rod was the only one enjoyed in grade school.
In middle school I needed a quick book report and used it. The teacher approved.
Later, Middle school I found a copy ot Kings Of The Road, at the Five and Ten
Not a rodders book but an excellent revue of Cl***ic cars of the thirties, and their race drivers.
Author Ken W. Purdy was terrific. Thanks to my neighbor's generosity, I found his column on the last page of early sixties Road and Track mags.
He taught me more about entertaining writing than I got from school.
