Well, yeah, its summer in north America, Salina is darn near dead center of the continental USA, it is rite now, at 11 pm 87 degrees, and 65% humidity. Highs thru the show are from about 92 to 95. I'm sure its much cooler in KC, 3 hours east. Thanks for the bump
Always a good show other than the heat as mentioned. They do let in cars other than just customs, but there are still likely more customs at this show than about any other at least in this part of the country. My son was just asking me yesterday about us going…not sure if we will or not this year.
I've been a number of times over the years. Yes, it can be hot. One year we just opened the windows on my 47 aerosedan after realizing the AC just couldn't keepup. But, the trip was always worth it. It's 600 miles one way for us. Lots of great cars, interesting people and fun times.
Take a cruise over to Cozy Inn for some sliders. One year a bunch of us went to The Brookville Hotel (now Kansas Legacy) in Abilene for family style chicken dinner. Must have been over 30 Hambers there.
Thanks Joe. Swap Friday and Saturday! Like I need more junk!!! Its fun though. Friday, 92 slight chance of rain, Saturday a scorcher...100, partly cloudy. Sunday, 103!
I'm originally from Hutch. Started going to this way back when it was in Thomas Park......heat's just part of the charm of the show. Have a good time.
It's maybe the best that's left of a combo show. The park has trees to help some. The swap meet is on the south side. Do it 1st after you park in case you are looking for something. Friday has less spectators and cars so it's easier for pics if that matters. There will be stuff that doesn't interest you but there is a good assortment of most everything.
It's always been one of the events on my "some day" list. I'm not sure my wife is willing to do a road trip to Kansas and then Central Texas and Blanco at the end of July though. We did the trip to Texas in 1981 when we were in our Mid 30's and had an 11 year old and one that had her 2nd birthday in Texas that year. that was the year Texas had something like 55 days straight over 100 and no let up.
Yes, I did go on Friday. I had business in Junction city early morning, plus a little rain so I did not drive a car. Next year I will try to. Swap meet was not too exciting, but thats ok, I seldom buy stuff just to have it in stock like I did all my life, try to stick to what I need on the current project, a plain jane 61 f100 short, flareside. A little too many 20" wheels and modern headlights at the show for my liking, buts thats just the way it is these days
I guess I should mention my 2 favorite cars. I'm an old man with a flip phone, often I bring my 20 year old digital camera along, but not this time, sorry no pics. 1st place car IMHO, was a 33 Ford roadster. Owned by a man from Kc, Jason sumpthin or other, I 'v met him met him a few times at the old Chickasha OK swap meet. A wheeler dealer in model 40 stuff, you local guys will know who I'm talking about. Hamb member? Any way, this 33 looked like one of the open wheeled roadsters in the Ford factory film where the Fords won the race hands down. Some old lettering on the body, a canvas tonneau cover over the passenger side of the cockpit, looked like they parked it after the race 80 years ago and brought it to the lead sled event. Fake patina! yada yada, that thing was cool. #2 was a 32 Ford highboy. Well, there's enough of those around you say, but this one was very special. It too looked like a time capsule, like you found a perfect body put up in the barn loft 80 years ago. Straight, rust free, paint free, and mounted on a 32 chassis with all the correct 40's and 50's parts. I do not know who owned that one, but it had vintage Kansas plates on it. If you hadn't noticed, I like old jalopy's
