Not to be a ****, but that dime is 90% silver and weighs 2.5 grams. At $32.97 an ounce, and doing the gram to ounce conversion, that dime is worth $2.38 silver melt value.
Here's a couple from Newfoundland, before it became Canada's tenth province. Kind of neat that they still struck large cents in 1936, and sterling silver five cents into the '40s. Yeah, 1945 isn't prewar but it's the same design type as the 1938-up.
Just found this thread ! Glad there are so many coin collectors a**** us. One of my non-automobile hobbies. Jon
This was my Christmas present from the bank the other day, I bet there's some good ones in there! The cent was demonetized some years ago here and the banks will accept them but are not supposed to give them back out. Sometimes one gets lucky though! I have heard that the US is also finally stopping cent production. If so, better get them from the bank before they are sent to the smelter!
Yes, the last US cent was minted last month. It recently sold at auction along with a gold minted cent and the last cent from the other mint for something like $600,000. I think the plates may have been included in that as well. I still get Canadian cents in change here in the US every now and then. There's probably more of them in circulation here in the States than in Canada.
Yeah, the article stated that the dies were included in the sale, along with the obligatory "Certificate of Authenticity". Uncle Sam certainly cashed in on this one. https://readingroom.money.org/all-i-want-for-christmas-is-the-last-u-s-cent/ Definately more Canadian cents circulating in the US than up here in the Great White North, since they haven't circulated here at all for over ten years. Coin stores are still getting them brought in in fair quan***y, I buy them by weight there. At face value, which is much less than copper value. The same situation may well play out in the US.
I have 6 brand new 2025 pennies fresh out of a roll that I'm going to hang on to... It's very possible they might be worth something more in the future....
