Can anyone school me on this hammer? There is a pin on the head and it can pivot on the handle.
Found 2 in a s**** pile. I think they are missing parts but it's a puzzler.

  2. Someone’s idea of a better mouse trap. An inventor hoping to cash in, maybe for hammering around a corner? Making nail pulling more efficient? Believe me I pulled a lot of nails in my youth.

That’s a ratchet head hammer . The head can be locked in different positions so it could be used in tight locations. Where it’s difficult to have a full swing . I’m just pulling your leg . I don’t have a clue Thank you for sharing your find

My guess is that it was part of an economy "universal" handyman's home tool set. (I remember when I was really young, my Dad had a super cheap *** socket set made of pressed steel and IIRC a square drive 'ratchet" handle. Not something you'd wrench on a car with but was functional around the house when working on bicycles, mower etc.)
Possibly, the bolt on handle allowed you to change to a ball peen or hatchet head without having to buy 3 separate hammers.
I'd guess that the handle was once covered with leather or perhaps a vulcanized rubber handle?
Could have been a cheap, mail order set or something purchased at a farm supply. Did Deere or I-H, etc ever make tools?

Yes the Ag equipment companies made tools for their implements . The tools were implement specific in the beginning.
