came across this speedway rule book at an estate cleanup. anybody know anything about the history of this track?
Ontenora is about 16 miles west of Kingston NY Roughly an hour south of Round Top NY, the track was in Olive Bridge NY. It opened in 1960 Joey Lawence the me with the Supercharged Mech. Injected Hilborn street flathead race there. The track was ahead of its time with box seating The traces of the track- A modern view from Google maps Form Kingston From Round Top- There is a town park next to the site that people use to access the old track however the track is on private property, and they are trespassing!
The track only raced five years, but it pulled in some big names! Front row inside Lou Lazzaro number 4 and “The Old Master” Frankie Schneider
I live 15 minutes away and never knew of it! Thanks for the history lesson! Now how about the long closed Woodstock track Robert. One of the cars that raced there is owned by the late owner of Woodstock Lumber and is displayed in a little wooden structure with plate glass sides in front of the office. It was on Racetrack Road in Bearsville.
Legion Speedway! From what I have found the track was open 1938 and closed at the end of 1941racing was banned during W.W. II and the track did not reopen after the war.
Absolutely! That is a great piece of local racing history! I will give you a call when I get home from work.
Thank you Robert. I wonder if it may have been open after WW 2. There is a VW in one of the photos. I doubt it would have got to the US before the war? The track cars sure look old! Great photos!
Plenty of racing history in this area! This is a car owned by Sokoll’s Garage the Ford dealer in Windham NY It ran the beach and several other NASCAR convertible from 1957-1959. My dad was always after Lyle Sokol about the car, but it got washed a way in a flood in the late 1960s or early 1970s and crushed! It driven by George Baumgardner and latter Bill Wimble. Baumgardner was a very successful driver here in New York state as was Bill Wimble who also was a NASCAR national Sportsman (Now Xfinity series) The Sokool’s also owned cars that race at the Coxsackie Speedway (Coxsackie NY Cox-Sock-ie) a 1/4 mile paved track.
SR100 I think your are correct. After looking at the photo again, it looks too big for a VW? Also the way the door is open sure doesn't look like a VW bug. The final scale issue is the size of the door opening and the woman sitting on the seat.
