Automobiles and old building don’t seem to be to far apart in this hobby. As I start to take on a project that will eventually consume me I stumbled across some pics of an interesting build that I’m not sure where the inspiration came from. My only guess is an Indy race styled Hotrod of sorts. Not sure the location or type of engine (or even it it got that far) or maybe it was a glorified art project, but the guys that haunted this building built parts for McDonnell Douglas so I know there was some very productive guys on the project. These are the only known pics of it and I have almost no info but I will continue to share with people until I do. Enjoy
There were a lot of "side" jobs that got done at McDonnel Douglas. I was told the body of the sprint car in my avatar (all aluminum) was built by a couple of guys at McDonnel Douglas. It was Wib Spaulding's first USAC car.
As cool as the car is, that building looks really neat. Looks like a great man cave, living quarters and storage above, garage below. I hope it is a renovation, not a clear out and tear down.
It isn’t an H-Mod. H-Mod is short for H-Modified Sports, so they are (at least nominally) two seaters. If it is a race car (and not a toy) it probably is a FIII or Formula Three, a cl*** for 500cc single-seaters that came out of Britain after WWII. Like H-Mod, it was a cl*** that attracted home-builders and tinkerers. Unlike H-Mod, the factory-built cars eventually pushed the homebuilts out. Originally intended as a low-cost cl***, the highly developed motorcycle engines drove the costs up. The cl*** was replaced by Formula Junior, which used auto engines with limited modifications.
The picture is really dark but I do believe that is an H-D sevicycle rearend and frame section. I've been wondering what the engine could be. In the Lane Museum in Nashville there is a belly tank built by Von Dutch that had an H-D ULH flathead in it. I don't think it would fit under this low body work.
