Hey man, as long as you're going all Psychedelic with the paint job, might as well squirt some freak dots and cobwebs on it too!

    @Bandit Billy,

This was back in the timeframe where flat black was all the rage. I didn't want to use black primer since water goes through that and I wanted weather protection. So I had it painted black basecoat with no clearcoat over it. That made it a great big solar collector. Note that in the 52 years I've owned this thing it has set outside for all that time except for the last vary few years. "Us poor folks has poor ways." Or so I've heard.

If you leave tomorrow you can have a nice leisurely 2-week vacation driving to LF III.

I feel ya Mike. I've always thrown some black on everything. Or just left it alone. I'm gonna paint this one. The flat black ran it's course I believe. Do you think people know that they have other flat colors? Lol

My paint supply has multiple colors on the "hot rod" flat shelf, I know there's white, red, blue, and black!

I just saw a post on facebook Justin Wilkerson has a few tailgates and thought of this thread. I see I’m not the first to recommend him. I have dealt with Justin before he will treat you right.

That's why America is great, we all have the opportunity to do what we want! Personally I have never tried to win the AMBR, or pebble beach, because I'm not impressed by who can spend the most money on a car, I'm more into a broke *** punk doing the best he can within his means, with help from other like minded ****ers, and enjoying the hell out of it! Paint jobs are expensive, I have 13 going on in my shop currently, a simple gallon of Omaha orange Nason basecoat was $600 a couple of days ago. I'm now basing my materials at $3000 per car for a redo. And up from that. My point is, don't let the lack of a fancy paint job keep you from enjoying a car or truck.

Thanks for the reply. I felt you would stick to your guns.
Nothing says Hot Rod like flat paint.
I ceased looking at your thread when I saw what you had.
Four years I drove a 55 Nomad on a poor boys budget.
Several shades of primer and a blue hood.
Looking at yours made me Homesick ( Jealous ).
I would think "If I'd painted it I'da held onto it" ( who knows )
Since you got it on the track I'm back on board:D
Happy that you'll be loyal to the image.
( Absolutely true about paint cost. My wife can't live without a new car.
Even the factories have trouble with paints )

    "Shiny" vs "Flats"
Ya,I know I'm old,so try to learn from first hander..
Time after WW2 to is when`I started building an painting modal cars, making my self toy hotrods n customs, picking up hot rod mags.< None of that had at any time ,was primer was anything but something that went on,to get smoother, before the shiny.
My Dad an all the others who came back from the war,as a hole, had more then enough of flat an bad paint*
Some time going into the 70s,things had got distorted by misunderstandings of youger guys seeing old photos ,an looking maybe inside at the back of there head wanting to do a hotrod or custom with out doing hard work{yet not add mitting that part}{ or in some case, never got to that point= All of that to me,if rod or car is "flat" the builder has a lazy spot, were the work of shiny goes.
(If your in that flats hole,it is likely your there from some distorted idea" It's the way it was! " plus any other BS ya don't see about flats.
I still like looking at rod n customs, even if unfinished flats,I like the work done so far ! I don't think of a flat car as finished, never will,ya I'm from another time, the one many are trying to be like.Yet do trendy stuff we never did and think we did.
As for the most common excuses used to cover up why it's not shiny= "I love flat!,",Hiding an not admitted even to your self is that lazy spot. Plus that other one is "Shiny cost to much" o_Omore cover up/ some very nice shiny cost less! . I see primer now with BS made up names" Hot Rod Black" that in using it to sell, is all the above.< often cost more then most shinys.
But when a guy is in love with flat, with out understanding how it got here, nothing I can say will fix that.
So do I like you flat primer paint,no,but I like your car=Your keeping things rolling on,and that is awesome.
Those that also in the 80s or 90s,like me,are not going to be around much longer any way,to tell that this or that is just trendy misreads of old pic.
If they even wanted too, would find the history of no unfinished {primer } were let in car shows*=they were unfinished!!!!,tell around the 70s=When this flats as a though of finish **** set in that hole in the head

:cool:Bottom line is always, have fun ,do what makes you happy. But also try to fit some real how it was history in there too. :D
I should proof read this, but now I'm old* n lazy too.;)

And most importantly, pay homage to the guy that previously owned the car, he no doubt put a lot of thought into that paint scheme.

Us old fart's that were actually involved back in the 50s & early 60s know that the ones that were in primer were not finished because they did not have the means to prep and paint it, or they had more work to be done before painting it not because they wanted it to be unfinished.

I don't mind flat black, especially on car that's purpose built for going fast. To me it shows all the money is spent on the important speed parts, shiny doesn't make it any faster.
If I hadn't wrecked my Henry J it would still be the tough looking flat black.

I talked to the tri five guy today, he has the gate and hatch, said he has plenty to choose from, and a nice set is $1000. Told him I'll be there Sunday

Some people just need to show off. No artificial cobwebs for Lloyd. I can see him hovering over the poor spider with a fly swatter and repeating the consequences if the didn’t spin those webs he way he wanted.
