Those two make a great pair, too.

I remember a writer for one of the UK cl***ic car magazines who, when life brought him to need a family-friendly minivan, bought a Daimler Limousine instead.

That ship has sailed for my wife and me, as we both only married in middle age, but I did have the thought that should I by some unforeseeable cir***stance find myself in the cir***stances, an Austin FX4 "black cab" with a big turbodiesel four in it would be just the thing.

    Hello,

My wife and I started together with a family hauler… for our small family, the two of us. We were in heaven being away from other parts of our lives and now together in a dinky apartment. Dinky, but it was ours alone. No one told us how to decorate, most of it was what we had and some new stuff we had saved to buy.
upload_2025-8-26_10-0-24.png Our small one bedroom apartment for our first "alone" holiday season. Both cars had to be parked outside in the So Cal coastal weather...

We had two 35mm cameras, dark room supplies and equipment, a 65 El Camino and a 62 Corvair and two surfboards. That was it for us. It was fun and exciting. Yes, my wife also had a ton of cool clothes that took up two closets. Yikes!

We eventually moved to a new small house and lived there for 6 years. Many years later, our son arrived and the family hauler took on a new meaning. Ever change a diaper in the bed of the El Camino on the side of the road, with cars whizzing by? That was hauling “family.” So, then, our 327 40 Ford Sedan Delivery was sold since it is a two person hot rod and not a family hauler. Now, our dinky station wagon had all of the things (room) to haul his “stuff” to grandma’s house and other gatherings.

Over the years, our lives adapted to one child and our cars went from a two door station wagon to a 4 door station wagon. At the time, we could not afford any hot rods, so they were small 4 cylinder station wagons with two doors at first, then to ease the back in movement of our son in and out of his seat, we got a 4 door station wagon.

Jump up to 2010 and we had been taking our granddaughter around to all of her activities. School was the main drop off and pickup. But our two door sedan was not the most handy for in and out of the back seat area. She still had to use a car seat until she was large enough to sit in normal rear car seatbelts.

So, our choice, as she was growing by leaps and bounds, was to get a 4 door 40 Ford Sedan for our secondary car, but for ease of access, no more two door cars. Now, we could do both, have fun driving around in an old 40 Ford Sedan with an SBC motor, A/C, and easy access to the rear seat for our growing granddaughter. We had a choice, buy one already made and/or a 4 door station wagon.

The second choice with 4 doors, but the same power.

    Note:

Our son and his wife “x-nayed” our choice of a 283 powered 1940 Ford 4 door sedan. They wanted a large SUV for their daughter while we were driving her around to all activities. So, goes the custom v8 powered old Ford Sedan… as per parents’ request. YRMV

Thank you this was my dad’s pride and joy but it had been a trailer queen for way too long. It’s won all the awards it needs and it’s time to put some miles on her. ;)

We had A 56 Bel Air, 9 p***enger wagon for a long time. We were the designated kid hauler for everyone. We had 3 rows. Lots of kid space.

Never had kids of my own, but plenty of friends, relatives, and other acquaintances have been hauled around in either the Mercury wagon or the Packard. Always fun to go out on a cruise with a car load of friends. Also, it is always fun to see the reaction of someone who has never sat / ridden in the back seat of a post-war American luxury car.
