Until recently, I had never heard a 67-72 Ford truck described as a bump side. Is this a new thing , like “square bodies”? Just curious…

Not a blue oval guy, but I've only heard it in the past couple decades. It may have started earlier.
Just another bit of easy to say slang. Bump side VS dent side. Just like Deuce, highboy, and slammed, intended to convey a particular thing in short hand.

Bumpside, dentside, bullnose, bricknose, OBS. All different nicknames for different generations of Ford pickups.

Most of these truck names have been invented in the past 10 years or so by the 30-40 somethings that are pouring their money into them. These are the trucks I grew up with, and I like several of them, but the one that's really stupid to me is OBS! They're all OBS!

Agree 100%. These names were never a thing when these trucks were new. Same with Square Body, Cat Eye, etc of the other brand. Hell, I still don't know what an OBS is.....?o_O:D

    As an old guy, facing his 81st birthday - - - I think I figured it out - - - OBSolete.

    Both 5-speeds with Noa - Cropped.jpg
Truth be known, for the last 13 years, I've driven this $1,000 CraigsList find 1986 Ford F150 - and I have absolutely no idea what Generation # or name the internet has given it. It has a Cummins 4bt (4 cylinder diesel) and a 5-speed overdrive manual transmission swapped in. Body is a 1952 Bell Telephone Systems service bed.

Picture was taken on New Year's weekend - I turned loose 2 15 year old kids (still too young for a Learner's Permit) on my 2 acres. They got very good at clutch control.

EDIT: The 1962 Volvo is going to Lead Ain't Dead in Dewey, OK.

I bought a 1970 F100 in 2010 because the price was right for a parts chaser. It wasn't until maybe 5-7 years later I started seeing the term bumpside, or bump for short on forums. When I talk to people it's just an old truck.

The truck magazines use OBS for Original Body Style…

I’ve always liked the fridge moniker for the 57-60 Ford f100.

Until I bought a 62 Ford Unibody I'd never heard of bump sides or dent sides or ?????? I've no idea when that started, I bought a new dent side (F250 with a 360) in 1974, I called it a gas hog.

The 61-66 have the moniker "slick" and I think that only goes back ten years or so. Maybe more?? To be honest I didn't think they were all that "slick" when they were new:)

Yea, hard to keep up with all these new terms for trucks that I have always just called by year range at best.

I have a Bumpside and Dentside!
    I like these identifier.
    I know my Fords, and know a 72 from a 73, but I don’t know 72 Chevy from 73. But I know a Squarebody when I see one.

Hell, even a seasoned Chevy guy has a hard time with the 73- 81(?). They changed 'em ever so slightly 82? (character line) though still square. They had to make 10 million of those things, now they're a premium! o_O

I don't mind all the names given to the different truck generations. I'd never heard of bump or dent describing Ford trucks until after I bought my 70 F100.

But I still call it a step side instead of a flare side. If you aren't a Ford guy, you usually don't know what a flare side or style side is.

When I was a kid none of us wanted a truck. We all wanted mustangs or camaros, etc. Maybe two of my buddies had trucks and that's because they were actual farmers, lol. Nowadays everyone wants a pickup, even the girls! Saw one of my buddies in town and I was in my new super duty, and his 15 year old daughter said "that's what I want when I get my license."

Like seriously?!?! Lol, super duty pickup for a little petite lady?!?!

But that's what they're into nowadays I guess.... My son is 11 and already is planning on the truck being his in five more years....

There was a thread on one of the ford truck forums about 10-15years ago where they were voting on what each generation should be called. I had no idea why they had to make up a name for them and I chose not to participate. I have an '83 F-250, and thought the "bull nose" name they made up for the '80-'86 trucks is stupid. "OBS" is stupid, "square body" is stupid... they're all stupid. Unfortunately, nowadays you almost have to use this BS nomenclature because it's become so normal in our world.

I choose to take the same stance on what to call these trucks as I do when it comes to what different years of vettes are called. I just use the years instead of any generational names or acronyms.

The kids have to have a name for them because then have no idea what year they may have been built.

Not that I'm much better. I can't tell you any year that an old Ford truck was built in, or what year any old Chevy truck was built in, but I can tell you the differences between each year of Dodge truck from about the late 30s through the early 60s. By the 70s, 80s and 90s I probably had 20 different Dodge trucks from those years, but they all tend to blur together. Get past the radical change in the Dodge between 93 and 94, and I can't tell what changed when.

Our knowledge lies in things we like.

Hell I always thought a dent side was the old Ford pu I had that was creamed on the right side. It definitely had a dent side, fender to box side….

    HAH!
As soon as you said Fridge I immediately thought of the late 50s models.
Neighbor was selling his 60 a decade or so ago. Always in the driveway nose in, thought it was a 60's 'slick' model. My reaction to take a look at it was similiar to when that chick in line ahead of you turns around:confused::eek:.
    The back didn't look bad...
    Not what I was expecting.:p:D

Don't mind the various nicknames for body styles, keeping track of all the various years/makes/models can be tiresome. Ford F series has how many generations now?
If someone said 10th Gen F series I would be trying to figure out if this was an '80s or a '00s model:D
