I Had A Problem At Work Today...

I'm a contractor working at a Gov't facility. I was sitting at my desk this morning when two ladies that I know from the ADP department came in and asked me to get up. I jokingly asked if I was in trouble and got an "up and down" shake of the head - they were there to confiscate my hard drive - apparently I'd downloaded some "pornography" the day before. I didn't have a clue what they were talking about - I knew I'd read Yahoo news and visited the HAMB the day before but definitely knew better than to go looking for porn. I asked what they were looking for and apparently the 'sniffer' they have saves all .jpg images that come over the net as thumbnails and every morning someone goes through them looking for porn. One of the images that had come through on my computer was considered porn - it was a an ancient looking old bag dressed only in a witches hat and a broomstick. To make a long story short they confiscated the hard drive, bagged it up to take to the legal department and gave me another to use until a decision could be made on what was to happen to me. Normally, if you happen on a site that has porn on it you just have to shut it down and immediately report it - nothing will happen to you. Unfortunately I didn't even think of this picture as porn (it's not except under the strictest sense of the word - it's just gross) - I didn't think to report it. My termination is a definite possibility - thankfully I was planning on retiring in January anyway - hopefully though I'll just get a slap on the wrist.

My point in this is to be careful what you post - if I needed this job and lost it because of this I'd be really pissed. It's my bad for surfing during working hours but it could happen to anyone.

 

I am really sorry you have a serious problem. On the other hand, I find it so re-assuring that my government is so vigilant. They might miss a shipping container full of enriched uranium or two, but we got you on the nekked witch,man!

 

A person is supposed to be productive at work. Play time is after work.

I'vd noticed, that some websites have porn, they will grab yer ,shit and make you a pervert...........OLDBEET

 

At work I was doing job related research and typed in spices extracts well holy moly the websense filter picked up "spiceS EXtracts" "SEX" - I told a co-worker and the owner about it. Some of this stuff is just plain nuts, no doubt about it.

 

The chick in the cube next to me asked what I thought about selling her unused wedding dress on ebay. I told her to try Craig list first--lots of people use it, and it's free. I'd only checked it out once before, and it'd been a while.

I'm with you. I didn't see anything bad. Just a frumpy broad in a frumpy sweater standing next to an abortion. Be thakful you don't have the IT nazi's like I do. I went from about 40 useable bookmarks to 3. Work sucks and they wonder why I knock'em down in hall.

 

you want US to be careful for your sake? damn us for making you surf the net while working! and it couldn't happen to anyone, only to someone surfing the internet at work.

Sounds like they're trying to screw-up your retirement. If things go really south before you collect your pension, file an age discrimination lawsuit against em. They'll leave you alone after the summons.

 

When my wife was in college we lived across the street from campus and the business builiding.Students had access to the computers there. I used her student internet i.d. to look for air ride air compressors and entered in something like blow jax compressors. I got instantly booted off the computer and her i.d. was banned for a month. I never knew air ride was pornographic.

Could be worse. I bought a 32 coupe once that had some nicely done glass fenders. Made by RamRod out of Canada, I believe. So, since I had never heard of this company I typed in ramrod.com ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, yea, not exactly what I was looking for.

 

Just tell them it was an art photo, it sounds like it's not exactly anyone you'd want to look at naked.. which I thought was what constituted porn. I mean, they have all kinds of things that are porno, but I never heard of elderly porn. Unless it's just larger size photos for those with vision problems -

No, that's just crazy--it doesn't even merit a slap on the wrist in my opinion, unless using company computers for personal net-surfing is expressly forbidden. The fact that just about everybody knows what "NSFW" means suggests to me that most businesses tolerate personal use of company internet access to some extent. And these days it's getting harder all the time to avoid objectionable images-- you don't have to be actively looking for them, they'll come looking for you.
If you get reprimanded for failing to report that one .JPEG, that's bullshit.

"damnfingers" I read your post and nearly puked! I get up at 3:30am and check out a few sites while having my coffee. The HAMB being one of them. This morning, I had a PM from Ryan explaining that he had deleted my post on the Halloween thread. I understood and posted a brief apology....then.....I read your post. Man, I'm 56 years old and am in tears as I type this. Although I realized the photo of the old witch was a tad tasteless, I NEVER in my wildest dreams considered it "pornography" or thought it would cause anyone to get in trouble!!! My GOD!
If there is ANYTHING I can do? I will make a statement, apologize, even pay some sort of fine. PLEASE Let me know. PLEASE print this out and forward it to the "authorities" and you/they can contact me through the info in my profile.
There is one hell of a lesson here! I am SO SORRY for causing you a problem and PLEASE beg them on my behalf to place the blame where it belongs. To the rest of the people here on the HAMB, I apologize to you too and rest assured, I will be much more selective in my posting in the future.........

 

What a buzz kill. I think I'll relax on it for a while. I normally pull up the HAMB while I'm on the phone with General Motors. Not that I don't pay attention to their calls, its that it usually is BS.

I'm active duty USAF. Only on the USAF computers everything is just blocked. I can get to a few sites, like this one ;>, but anything to do with porn is of course blocked. If it were as bad as damnfingers place the HAMB would be blocked for sure -- due to the avatars some of you guys use! I thought that was where he was going at first. Maybe the avatars don't register since they aren't downloads though.

 

I was helping my kid with homework and they needed a map of Hong Kong. I typerd in "Map of Hong Kong" and got lots of maps on the red light / sex merchant districts of Hong Kong.

 

I'm an IT guy and I have to purge the servers of porn every so often cause it fills the volumes. Some of the stuff Iv'e seen..... One of the guys in recieving put a few pics of his wife slobbing some other guys knobs in his home directory.. I guess the are "Swingers", His history is full of hits to swinger sites. His wife works in purchasing... I cant but smerk everytime I see her now. Never put anything on your computer that you wouldn't want to see on the front page of the news paper. Same thing with your emails.. Every incoming and outgoing message is "backed up".

The language on here is worse than that photo as far as I'm concerned. I don't know how far it's going to get pushed and like I said at the start I'm ready for retirement if it comes to that. I was planning on leaving in January - grin - this will only push it up a month or two - if anything happens at all. I hope, like Haunted Ken said above, that legal is going to get a laugh and that's going to be it.

yeah, where I work they made us sign a sheet saying that company policy prohibites the use of work computers for personal bussiness. It's been a couple of years since then, but everyone still uses them. Hell like I said the other day I stay on the computer, mostly here fordbarn or Ebay. Nothins been said yet.

 

If your on a VPN ..turn it off. Try downloading another browser like Firefox. Use that to search the net instead of IE. Clear all History & Temp Internet files each day.
