Doing my 55 Chevy again and after dipping frame and adding CPP tube control arms the front spring I had on this car since 1979 will not work. They go in but they have an arc so bad the shock will not go in.Hits the inside of spring.I have bought a new set of 55 springs a shorter by 1 coil.I haave tried removing the arms and springs about 4 different times. The frame is a roller with complete drive train in.I have been told by CPP after the body is on it will settle down.I even put it under my 4 post with a car on it and let the weight on the frame and it didn't chang,Thanks for help trying to solve this problem
A picture would help but I imagine your car is sitting so high that the bottom arm is so far from parallel with the frame’s spring seat that it’s causing that bend in the spring. I think they’re right put the body on and go from there.
Check to see if the top of the springs are actually in the upper frame pocket. Seen this on several occasions. People don't always get the top of the springs properly placed into the pockets and it causes all kinds of problems... ...
these are new CPP arms.I looked at another 55 a few minutes ago and the angle that those lower tubular arms spring pocket was at a different angle. But they had coil overs.I don't want to put coil overs on this car.Looks like the angle of the spring plate need to be a different angle for factory springs,Have a pic on my phone but don;t know how to send it to my computer. Will keep trying to do that. Thanks for some help
I've even put the ch***is under my 4 post with my Model A on it and put weight on the 55 ch***is and it didn't work either. Will keep trying. Thanks for suggestions
Did you check to make sure they are in the frame pockets and the end of the pigtails are in the right spot on top ? The frame has stops built into the frame pocket that the spring pigtails go against...
Dead weight on a ch***is will not let the Tires move outboard to their loaded width. You must roll the ch***is back one full tire rotation then back forward same amount.
Put a couple of pcs of sheet metal about 2 ft square under each front wheel with grease in between them. That will let the tires move outboard when you apply weight
Cut a couple trash bags down the 2 side seams and across the bottom seam to separate both sides. Do this with 4 trash bags, lay 1 side on the floor, spray some spray grease or oil on it, then lay the other half on top. Then sit the tires of the car on these. It will slip and slid and let the tires relax. Once your done just pick them up and throw them away... ....
So, playing by our rules of everything being Vintage I won't mention or post up a photo of the Go-Jacks I use. Oops
Thanks I will try some of the suggestion.I'm almost ready to put body back on frame after I paint roof.Underside and firewall already painted. When I did my 71 Monte Carlo I put springs in while on rotisserie with no problem.I even had this ch***is on rotisserie and turned it over to make sure springs were in pocket and the same thing.Sometimes things just wear you out.Again thanks
You are ******* in the wind and wasting your time until you get the car back together and get the weight of the body and the engine and transmisison on those springs to settle them out. I don't even know how the hell you got them in there without the weight of the enigine and body to help unless you used a spring compresor. I did front end work for years and Those springs don't settle down wihout all the weight of the complete car on them.
Thanks for advice on the springs. The ones I put on my Monte Carlo while it was on the rotisserie went in with no problem. No engine no body. But this one is just different.
