I know a lot of you have done this and I have always wanted to and recently I acquired a complete 32 axle, perch pins, and spindles to go under my ‘29 roadster. My stock A kingpins were perfect in the 32 spindles, no movement, no nothing. Can I run the stock Model A brake actuators or do I need the 32-34 style?
Get yourself a set of 32/34 front brakes to run with the 32 axle & spindles. They are a bigger & better brake than the model A's and it's a bolt on!
Use the A actuators if your keeping the mechanical brakes. You will also need a spacer for the wishbone as the 32 axle is 1/4 inch thinner. If you go with 32 brakes you still use the A actuators.
Thanks. I did put a 1/4 spacer on the bottom. The reason I am asking is the area on the 32 perch pins where the actuator bolts on is almost twice as thick as the A perch pins.
The brake actuator of the Model A allows the brake rods to run parallel to the frame and thus fit better, the 32-34 run under the frame to the middle. I just built the same. Greetings Harald
If you do 32 front brakes make sure you have the actuator rod that goes through the kingpin for a 32 as well, the Model A is too short. While you are in there, add the floaters to the front wedges, this makes a Nice difference!
This is the one area that I am a little confused by. The boss on the 32 perch pin where the actuator bolts is nearly twice as thick as the A perch pin. The actuator when mounted is on a slight angle. Do you guys shave the boss down to match the A?
Anybody have any idea as the thickness of the perch pin bosses that hold the actuator? Did you guys just run them as is?
When I did this, all the threads I read or followed I never saw any mention of thinning the actuator or perch pin mount. If you loosen the perch pin and then mount the actuator it should turn enough fit flush without a slight gap.
