    “ONLY THE LONELY CAN PLAY…”

    Hello,

My wife and I were raising our son and it was a trying time getting to a spot in our lives to be comfortable with our values and family life. Our son was approaching the goal of getting him to the “independent stage,” as all parents want their sons/daughters to be in any stage of their lives. It would take him to the teens as we all did, but he was a wonderful decision maker for himself and made great choices as we always gave him, or he created.

We knew we were going to be ok in the long run, but it sure takes a while to get to that stage. But, both of us working together since 1967 was heading to a bright future and lives. But, wow, what a couple of roadblocks that halted our lives for a while. The meaning can have different concepts while putting things together for all of us in the long run.

    Jnaki

Sometimes all it took was a day at the beach to have a relaxing campfire and dinner watching the sunset over the blue Pacific Ocean. The bright red sky melding with the last of the blue made some wonderful colors and that made both of us feeling a little less anxious about everything. So, it took a while, but we both headed in the right direction and got us to the stage where we are today. A slow easy going lifestyle that puts a smile on our faces everyday… YRMV

“So hold on, here we go
Hold on to nothin' we know
I feel so lonely way up here
You mention the time we were together
So long ago, well I don't remember
All I know is that it makes me feel good now…”

“HOW TO FALL ASLEEP: FIND A CHAIR, FALL ASLEEP…”
    Hello,

I have been practicing this since my surfing days. No, not even spending time under my brother’s 58 Impala replacing a 3rd member rear axle Positraction unit on Thursday nights for years, did me under. Yes, I was tired spending time after school on Thursday night in preparation for Saturday’s all day/night drag races at Lion’s Dragstrip. It took me from 3:30 pm until 10 p.m. most afternoon/nights. There were a couple of 11:30 pm finishes as I was a little tired and cold underneath the Impala in the concrete driveway.

But, it wasn’t that activity that made me tired or sleepy in the day time. One time my dad was gone on an almost, 4 day deep ocean fishing trip. My brother and I went surfing and when we got home, he went to work. After a nice lunch, I sat in my dad’s recliner and just started reading magazines. In a few moments, I thought my mom put a blanket on me… but I must have been in a dream like moment. I was tired and began to think of the next thing I wanted to do in surfing… travel…

By the time I woke up, it was dark. But, it was 3 a.m. My brother had come home from work and left to go camping until Monday. My mom was fast asleep and I was awake at 3 a.m. It was 15 hours from the time I remember coming home from surfing the day before from 5 am to 11:30 am for lunch. And, sitting down in my dads recliner to read a magazine. My, how time flies. But, my mom said after lunch, I was fast asleep through the afternoon, dinner time and into the early morning.

Wow, at age 16, I was already practicing for the modern day’s activities. If I see our favorite comfortable chair(s) and I happen to sit in one with or without my laptop or book, I am asleep in record time for a good two hours. If it is warm to hot, sleep comes faster and stays longer. Yikes!

Actually, old age into retirement has its advantages. A physically active walk around the neighborhood hills makes it nice… But this seems like a good part of the day. Work in the morning in the yard, go for a nice drive for lunch and then “Find a chair, Fall asleep…” YRMV

“AGE IS AN ISSUE OF MIND OVER MATTER. IF YOU DON'T MIND, IT DOESN'T MATTER.” ~MARK TWAIN

    Hello,

I knew if I kept reading all those Mark Twain Books that our High School English Teacher assigned, somewhere down the line, I would use a phrase or two in term paper or book report. It was a cool time to be a teenager in the early 60s. The whole of the USA was just starting its world involvement activities.

So, the idea was to grow up as good as we could, for the limited time we all may have in the future. Lots of rhetoric was dispersed all over the USA. Some bounced off most shoulders and others jumped on the band wagon, for what reason, who knows…

So Cal was a center of rock and roll music for some of us. It influenced our tastes and moments at teen gatherings. Somehow, wherever we went, it was old time rock and roll mixed with the new rock band music of the early 60s into the 70s. Someone asked my wife and I if we ever listened to a woman rock singer called Janis Joplin. Ha!

She was the iconic female singer of the S.F. Bay area rock music scene. Every time we went to S.F. every radio station was playing a Janis Joplin song. Some of the words did not meld with most of the adult population, but for most 20 somethings, it was some moving music.

    Jnaki

As 20 somethings, my wife and I actually went to a small rock music venue in So Cal.
    upload_2025-9-12_2-41-15.png
The small music venue was right on PCH in Huntington Beach. The concert floor was right in front of the small two person dining tables. So, our table was on the edge of the area where the stage guys were setting up the band equipment. As we finished dinner and the tables were cleared, the band walked out onto the bandstand area. They were about 10 feet from our table.

The first thing we assumed was that it was going to be loud. A little louder than we played our music through our 15 inch bass speaker at our dinky apartment. Ha! Needless to say, the concert was great and the sounds that tiny Janis Joplin was singing, were just blasting our ears.

Later on, when asked about the music we like, we were mentioning that this concert was pretty outstanding. But, our relatives cared less as this was not their cup of tea. Besides, we were a little deaf after the concert for several days... Ha!

So, since we were a little older than those present in the family gathering, the attitude we had was that it was not their thing and we did not care at that moment. My wife and I were doing our own thing and that is the way we have been for our long relationship. “It did not matter to us…” YRMV

    Hey @jnaki
I was 10 years old in 1963, growing up in the hot, dusty, little mud puddle, of the Atwater, Winton , Merced area of the San Joaquin Valley.

I Started High school in 1968, so I know exactly of what you speak in regards to the music of that era.

In eighth grade, was when I heard Janis Joplin for the first time from the Album " Cheap Thrills" with the iconic artwork by R. Crumb. It was at a friends house.

At that point in time, since I had no radio or a record player, this was my first exposure to that kind of great music, and most importantly, the wild and entertaining artwork by R. Crumb!

The whole album was great, and two of the songs on that album are still two of my favorites, her version of " Summertime ", and the powerful " Piece of my heart "

From then on, I was hooked, by that kind of great music, and also such great publications as
"Zap Comix", and the "Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers" by Gilbert Shelton.
Thanks for rekindling those great memories from that time period!
    Thanks from Dennis.
