Thanks Dave. It’s out of necessity really. They wanted 17 grand just for the kitchen cabinets and that’s not installed or painted. I have about 2 grand in materials so far and that includes the closet and all the other cabinets. I bought 12 more sheets of 3/4” Maple the other day. The ones quoted also don’t have backs, mine do. I’m waiting to do the kitchen cabinets until last. I figure maybe I will have a groove on, by then.
I dunno, but they are all about that around here. That was strike 1. The fact that Mama Root sent him pics and spent about two hours explaining to him what she wanted and then he waits 3 weeks and sends us pics of production cabinets, was strike 2 and 3!
Well, I hit a major milestone today. I finished the flooring on the first floor. Roughly 1750 sf. I probably doubled that, since I do everything twice. I can see why @Lone Star Mopar quit doing it for a living. It sucks. We are gaining on it. It seems like the never ending project will never be done, but I have to keep telling myself that every day we get a little closer.
Depends on your back and knees. They quoted me 5 grand to lay this floor. It's probably worth it, if you are in a hurry. This coupled with the paint, the cabinets and the trim, saved me about 30 grand. That's a whole lot of hot rod parts. If you decide to venture into the world of the brainless....you will need these. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BS6Z5S6Y/?tag=atomicindus08-20
At this point, for 5k I'd write the check just to be done. Dude quoted me almost 10k for the same square footage as you. Redonkulous.
I still have about 500 sf upstairs to do. The 5 grand was just labor also. I already dropped 7 grand on materials. That doesn’t include the 750 sf I have to do in the shop office. It will be a period correct tile of some sort.
You're on the home stretch now....at least on flooring. LOL Yeah, the 10 was just the labor on the install...no materials. The flooring is already here. They ain't gettin' da job. Maybe the next guy that quotes it will stand a better chance. Ha .....and I ordered me some of those knee pads....if only for crawling around under the house to finish the wiring and the HVAC.
I love mine, especially since I dropped 60 lbs. my knees are bony now….MamaRoot feeds me on commission, based on how much I get done to the house…
Here is a pic to prove that I am actually doing something. Flooring down and windows trimmed. Still hafta do the sills, but those will match the counters. Made out of some precious element…..Trim carpenters are not allowed to make fun of me.
Its all looking great so far ! Alot of my customers over the years were people that had done thier own floors previously & decided never again. Next time they would just pay us. Those knee pads come in handy in the shop or all kinds of work around the house & property. My ol worn out knees wont touch the ground without them. If you do end up ever paying for installation make sure to shop around for quotes. Ive seen plenty of contractors charge double & even triple what we would. Painters seeem to be the worst when in comes to over charging & not finishing in a timely manner. I'll be a DIY guy as long as im able.
Thanks. We are DIYers for sure. A friend of mine always says, it's not just the money you paid...you had to work for that money, then pay taxes on it, so it costs more than you think.
Exactly ! I'll add to that something my father taught me when I was a young man starting to fix our own cars & rehab our old house. "Just because you pay someone else doesn't mean they'll do a good job". Ive found that to be a very true statement. The few times I relinquish control & farm a job out, im often left with "Well I could have done a better job than that" regrets. Or "man that cost way to much for the effort involved." Kind of buyers remorse... I'll never forget showing up to take my Pops to Chemo therapy treatments. Stage 4 pancreatic cancer & 65 years old. He's in the shop changing the oil on his pick up truck. I gladly would have done it for him. He could have paid the 50$ & had it done locally. Nope, some of us its just in our DNA. Why pay someone else to do what I can do myself. Thats the reason Ive enjoyed following along with your efforts on The Dustbowl Speed Shop World Headquarters. I get inspiration & motivation seeing what other DIY guys are capable of doing. I think that also embodies the spirit about what the HAMB & this thing we do is all about.. DIY TIL WE DIE !!!! Keep up the good work. Sorry for my ramblings on your thread..
Thanks man, I appreciate it. A lot of times when I post progress pics, it feels like it’s pretty amateur, compared to a lot of guys abilities.
Root it amazes me how much work that you are doing, but i look and realize how much i did when i built my barndominium. Don
So, we got another major milestone today. The Black Plastic Wigwam (TM) was disassembled. We have moved into the house, so we figured we might as well break camp. We spent the last 2 days clearing out the shop, moving stuff inside to make room for me to build some cabinets. You guys won’t be nearly as impressed as we are. Also, I forgot to show you one of my Marketplace finds. I bought two of these industrial cabinets for like $150. They will work perfect for sandpaper and sanding blocks etc. They are monsters, like 7’ tall. They came from some ag outlet.
Still doing monotonous stuff….. I did take out 10 minutes and threw the plate for the screen door on the buffer. Before After
So, I have been building cabinets for a while. I am seriously out of my depth here. I just keep forging on. I don’t have much exciting to post, but I did mount the old screen door on the pantry. It came out pretty cool. It’s kinda wonky and twisted, but it is the real deal. It came off of an old country store, so we found it fitting to make it ours. Wife had this sign made up for it. I had an old door laying around with a super cool burled wood knob. This one was missing, but it originally had a regular knob and not just a pull, but it was MIA.
Boring laundry room cabinets. Waiting on counters and doors. Mama wanted a multilevel cabinet for her laundry baskets to sit on, by the washer. Folding table on the right.
Really nice door, & you do good cabinets. Now that folks know, prepare to be bugged to do theirs... . Marcus...
