Well, it's definitely off-topic, but maybe we can consider them "hot rods of the air". There are land-based WWII vehicles that will be part of this as well. I thought there are folks here who may be interested in this but, mods, if it's too far off base feel free to do your duty. This is a WWII museum that's less than an hour away from me in Minnesota. They're putting on an airshow, 250th anniversary celebration of the United States Navy, featuring Navy and Marine Corps aircraft in action. More information on their website: https://www.fagenfighterswwiimuseum.org/ And here: 250th Anniversary of U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Celebration: Victory At Sea At Fagen Fighters WWII Museum — Fagen Fighters WWII Museum It's a 2-day deal and man, I would so love to be there myself but my weekend is already booked. It's an amazing place. They do have an online store with autographed WWII aircraft prints, books and other stuff. If you're in the neighborhood, don't miss it. Any idea who the guy is who did the t-shirt artwork for the event!!??
Kalamazoo Battle Creek International Airport in Kalamazoo Michigan has a Air Show every year and has a Museum of Vintage WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War and newer Fighter Jets & more in there Museum and they have pilots that fly those beautiful Fighter, Bombers & Transport during the Summer. I see those Vintage Cool Planes, Jets, Bombers and many more fly over every summer. I've been a sky watcher since I saw many different kinds of Helicopters, Jets, those Big Transport Planes with troops and Bombers fly over our Farm by the hundreds in 1967-1970's during the Vietnam War. I laid on my back looking up counting but so many flew over I lost count. I watched those War Air Machines go by for hours back then almost everyday, we could hear them coming from way off and feel the rumble on the ground and we'd run outside and wait & wait tell they came into view, then watch for hours sometimes 3 or 4 hours several times a day and hear them go over during the night, I can remember my Mama crying every time they flew over the Farm. I can still today see all those wonderful War Machines flying over in my mind, we kept busy as Pen Pals to our older cousins, Uncle's, Aunt's and neighbors and made many new friends writing to our Soldiers during the Vietnam War. I know folks don't like calling Vietnam a War, to my family and friends it was a WAR... Thanks for bringing those very old memories back to this old man, it made me feel like a young boy again for a moment. Dustin (1Nimrod)
I was born at Castle A.F.B. in 1953, we lived out in the country and we were about a 1/2 a mile away from the glide path of the main runway, so my sky was full of military aircraft from day one of my life. You can look on google earth at my folks old address, 7243 Mercedes Ave. Winton California, 95388, and then zoom out a bit to see where the runway is, and then you can imagine just what was a never ending parade of aircraft all day and all night. Back then it was a ton of B-52's, and KC-135's, and Convair Delta Dart F-106's, and T-33 trainers. The sound of jet noise was something that we all had to put up with, but I never got tired of it, because I was hooked on aviation, in all forms as a kid. Those big machines would often fly right over our house, and it was impressive to say the least when they were low enough, to see a lot of the detail of the aircraft, that close, as they flew over my head. I even saw a Douglas C-124 Globemaster fly across the pasture to land at Castle, the sound that those 4 big radial engines made, was a sound I will never forget, a rumbling thunder you could feel in your chest. The Douglas DC-3 and the Stearman biplanes, at a young age, really were my favorites, and as I grew older, I got to know all of the very cool WW-2 Warbirds. I really grew to appreciate all of the cool radial engine powered civilian aircraft as well. I taught myself photography, so that I could use the slide's to let me draw the planes I loved, and I eventually went on to procure the T-Shirt concession out at the Sea plane base on Lake Winnebago, and I did that annual Oshkosh gig in the summer, for 26 summers, so I have seen a ton of great aircraft, on the ground and in the sky's at that event. When I was in my early 30's, I was lucky enough to be a part of a DC-3 crew in Alaska, hauling fresh fish from King Salmon Alaska over to Kodiak Alaska, and that was really a huge high point for me as a person that loves aviation. So I can totally appreciate these various events of this summer that are posted here, airshows, and especially those that are cool enough to have vintage cars and hot rods that are able to be a part of the show, are well worth any gear heads time to go and see and participate, and enjoy the great planes from the past that still continue to fly today! Thanks from Dennis.
Hot Rod's in the Air way Cool. I've always enjoyed seeing War Bird's Fly over all summer long. Dustin (1Nimrod)
For those of you who can access it, there's a page with photos and videos of the event on Facebook If the link doesn't work, search Facebook for Fagen's Fighters WWII Museum. Thanks for the comments, fellas. Much appreciated.
