Just found this thread. What a car man, nice. And you're in the mitten... close to me. Cruise and beers sometime.

Hey Jeff, does this fella know our guy? Was our guy not once a suspect as well?

Indeed. Brad. Seen his new ride? He's left the 50s behind. Damn whipper snappers and their 60s and 70s cars.....

Man what a whirlwind end to the year. Didn’t accomplish much with the car, but did score come cool parts for it. Found a 3/4 potvin regrind cam and a set of used Navarro heads online. We did get to take it on one last run in November in the car for unfortunately a funeral for a brother in another local club, which i made some carpet to keep us somewhat warm during that trip. Fingers crossed once some of this early seasons snow clears out so I can get it back in the garage and start getting to work.

If you already haven't installed the heads, you should optimize the "quench" before installing them. I believe it to be the single most effective improvement that can be made to a flathead, increasing both mileage and performance. It involves milling the heads and modifying the combustion chambers and is cheap and effective. As to the cam, the stock Merc cam may just may be a better fit for your car than the Potvin. Do a little research before changing the cam. Here's a good place to start : https://www.tildentechnologies.com/Cams/FlatheadPerformance.html. Then, of course, there are all of the problems with using a used cam : new or used lifters, is it worn, was it correctly ground, etc.

You are probably going to update your carburetion down the line, so now would be a good time to start thinking about upgrading your ignition. I would suggest an SBC distributor converted by Charlie Schwendler in New York, or perhaps an aftermarket replacement (Mallory, MSD, etc.) I would avoid the cheap imported distributor being offered currently, as they are electronic and very unreliable. My best advice would be an old flat-top SBC Mallory converted by Charlie. The work very well and really have "the look". The SBC versions are much easier to find and quite a bit cheaper than flathead specific Mallory's. As to carburetion, the quickest, easiest, cheapest, and a**** the best is a small base 2G mounted backwards on a bored out stock Merc manifold. It will flow as much or more that dual 94's or 97's and is much easier to tune. I've been running a stock '51 Merc with modified heads, a 2G and Mallory dual point in my '51 Ford club coupe for the last 10 years, and love it. People who ride in the car are impressed with it's performance.

    Good luck with your car.:)

  10. Some black rattle can on the aluminum radiator does wonders to improve looks. What I did on the Amazon radiator in my 53 Chevy lol
