been looking for a 30's coupe for a few months and found this one local to me. PricI've e kept dropping and I was able to buy it relatively cheap. Originally looking for a Dodge or Plymouth but came circling back to this one. Especially after my buddy Jake Christmas from Los CoChinos found one in a barn. Fell in love with it when I saw it in person. Paid for it and drove it home. Other than Jake, I don't know anyone else that has one. I think production numbers are in the 8k range. Also the only year for suicide doors (chevy and olds). Aside from the typical sagging doors the rest of the wood is in great condition. "Great" for its age I should say. No rust anywhere. I'm not really sure what direction to go. One idea is olds rocket v8. The inline 6 runs okay. Enough to drive it home 10 miles at 30mph. Suspension and brakes are good as is cooling.
Looks GREAT. My cousin had one of those a few years ago, not that nice though I think he sold it to a builder, who made a tail dragger out of it and sold it on EBay.
Dare to be DIFFERENT! Mod the six, 5sp transmission. Doll it up to your liking.. Subtle is better. Ben
Kind of the same with getting into Buicks. Be different! Run the 6 and think V8 later. Maybe a 303/324? Nice car...
My 3rd car was a 2 owner F-35 4dr with trunk. Olds was always ahead of the pack engineering wise - hydraulic brakes years ahead of most makes, independent suspension, etc. 5 on 5 lug pattern enables you to run a wide variety of later production or custom wheels. The driver's side has LH thread lug nuts IIRC. The front bumper back bars can be turned upside down to make the car look 2'' lower .... That Olds is twice the quality a Plymouth or Dodge is ...
I think i've seen a video of it. It was black at first then painted a light cream color I believe. Thanks Ben. 5 speed isn't a bad idea. Thanks ! Yes sir. Don't plan to pull the six until I have a v8 built. Thanks for the front bumper info. Had no clue. Reason I was looking for a mopar was because I was building a 37 plymouth but sold it before I could finish it. Glad you agree !
Back when the GM guys used to race the old GM coupes, the GMC overhead valve inline 6 motors were the top motor choice. With the multiple carbs, straight pipe exhaust, they were fire breathing dragons. Not a GM guy, but if I had that Olds coupe, the GMC motor would be something I would be looking into. As far as the comment about the Olds being twice the quality of a Plymouth or Dodge, the GM people always liked to dream such things...
GM wised up in 1940. The only wood in my Buicks are the backing strips for the interior garnish moldings.
Nice Olds. Drive it as is for a summer. Once taken apart, many rods never see the road again for 30 or more years.
Nice. That looks just like a carc*** I drive by almost every day. Gonna have to slow down a bit more and take a closer look. Lines are nice when its out in the open.
Perhaps invest some money with Rickster and get him to do a couple renderings. Its a nice looking car, for me it looks like a mellow chop might help it some.
Went out for a stroll and got a little stranded. Limped it back home and found the leather cup on the piston is toast. Ordered a rebuild kit from Mike's Carburetor parts for the Carter W1
I have a 35 2 door slant back there is a **** ton of wood in them so take the door panel off and crank the turn buckle that will align the door. I replaced the wood with metal and updating my 303 that I'm installing in the car.
