    Hello,

I can still remember sitting at our small kitchen table in our old houses in Long Beach. As kids, we ate after our dad left for work. Whether it was during the school year or before, we ate after he left, so we had the whole small table. Our mom made it easy for us during breakfast several times a week. She gave us large boxes of cereal for breakfast. We ate several bowls and that filled us up. A slice of toast was added and off we went to play.

Somehow, our mom got on the kick that two or three bowls of cereal poured out of a large box was not the most nutritious meal for the two small brothers. So, she limited the amount of cereal and then cooked stuff like eggs, sausage or any meat left over from dinner. I remember hot thick baloney slices fried in butter, for breakfast as there was nothing else to eat after two bowls of cereal.

So, our amount of cereal was limited from the large boxes. One day our dad brought home a new thing, small boxes of our favorite cereals in one long package. Now we had choices of eating the cereals at breakfast. Our favorites were in the package, but the quantities were less than if we poured out our own portions from the large box. Now, we ate the smaller portions in one box. We cut out the lines printed and carefully separated the sealed wax paper to get to the actual cereal. Since it was sealed at the bottom, milk could be poured into the opened box.

It must have been the process of carefully opening the back of the box, carefully opening the wax paper and then folding the paper back to expose the cereal. That took a while and after finishing one box, that was all we wanted. So, our mom was sneaky in getting us to eat in the morning, but not over eat only cereal for breakfast.

I liked the pre sweetened varieties. My brother did not like the pre sweetened kinds and only took out the ones where he had to sprinkle sugar on them, then eat. My choice had ulterior motives. I could eat the pre sweetened cereal any time like a snack. A sugar rush was great during the resting times in our backyard or out in the large grassy area far from home. Just take out the box and rip into the presweetened cereal for a meal away from home. A snack on the spot for continuous play. We Army guys had to have a snack between battles out in that tall grassy area location. YRMV

As teenagers later on, a box or two of cereal lasted for several hours of early morning surf adventures. Then a nap and our lunch always was one thing to look forward to during our rest times. Those little boxes of cereal were also handy to take along for a late afternoon snack, too.
