2 hours to Crowley Lake on Highway 395, just below the famous Mt. Whitney peak. Hello, The little town in the middle of a wide dry area in the Spring and Summer is the base for visiting Mt. Whitney. But, prior to the increase in visiting Mt. Whitney as a trail climber, trout fishing nearby was the main attraction for most that went through the downtown area of Lone Pine. Our dad stopped at that jumping trout hardware store and the adjoining sporting goods store many times. Why? Well, he liked the owner and the shops had an unlimited variety of fishing hooks and lures for trout. The larger hooks for the “big” ones and the dinky ones smaller than your baby fingernail for the foot long trout on opening day. Plus, they had the best supply of salmon eggs, Velveeta cheese, yes, bright yellow chunks of cheese along with the normal lures and flies. Folks laugh at the mention of Velveeta Cheese. As we all know, fishing is a time consuming thing of doing nothing to usually get nothing in return. But, at least one could have a nice sandwich of Velveeta Cheese on soft white bread for a snack while the long wait is happening. These places knew the value of Velveeta Cheese for trout fishing. It works in more ways than one...YRMV Jnaki The shops were definite stop overs, although there were other hardware stores in the larger areas as one got near to the Lake Crowley fishing dock and edges of the surrounding lakes. Sometimes, one just needs 10 more thinly packaged fishing leaders to attach to one’s own monofilament reels. One can never expect to catch just what is supposed to be there on opening day. If and when the stocked trout are biting with lightweight lines, then the stock gets depleted fast. If the “larger” ones are hitting, then a change of lines is necessary so one does no loose so many to the big ones swimming below. Our dad always had light weight reels and poles all the way to larger poles and larger reels for the different biting trout… Note: Imagine hard core trout fishermen buying their supplies at this store on the last week in April every year for those early days of “opening day” of trout in California. Our dad told us of many stories about wading through a foot of snow, just to get to the sporting goods store entrance. That is hard core… For our dad, the zillion times he went to Lone Pine to stop for his final supplies before the festivities of “opening day” at Lake Crowley paid off one year, when he came home with the “largest trout” (pun intended) trophy caught at Lake Crowley. It was a huge three pole, metal cast, jumping trout on top. That huge trophy made our drag racing trophies seem inconsequential on the trophy case of our study den.
