I was at the Long Beach swapmeet last Sunday and a friend of mine Wayne ****ey was setting up his normal great selection of nos smalls from Cal Custom, Hollywood Accessories..Eelco and others. He goes by Weirdo Wayne. Luckily I was walking by as he pulls this poster out. He tells me that he was in the club..that it dates to about 1965 and they used to hang it and others like it at car shows or wherever they got together. I had to have it. He brought it to sell..but was disappointed that I was buying it so early in the morning. He wanted it to draw attention to his booth. I offered to leave it there...he said for what? So I can tell everyone it's sold? Wayne's a good dude and the kind of guy you can meet at a swapmeet out here. Hope you guys like seeing the poster.
I believe the Tridents started in 1960. I was in the club for a short time when I lived in California in 1962. They put on several shows in the So-Cal area back then. Mick
They had a Facebook page in June of 2011. No posts since then....looks like it was for a reunion. Lots of pics. https://www.facebook.com/TridentsCarClub/
Hello, Having been a Long Beach local since 1946, we grew up in the big wide city limits. Our reach was with our hot rods and fast sedans as teens. We went to all of the local shows held at the various locations in So Cal put on by the Tridents. The ones in Long Beach were the best as it was in one of the local auditoriums. By the time we left high school, the newest arena was already built and we missed being the first graduating cl*** at that facility. Other high schools had larger stadiums located on campus. Our school was one of the first built in Long Beach and had a stadium, but it was too small to have anything other than an outdoor school ***embly, or watch football practice or even the track meets. So, we were given the privilege of being the only school to have access to the old Municipal Auditorium for our school events. Graduation, all night dance, etc. By the time we graduated, the new arena was already attached and ready, except for a few minor things. So, we had to graduate in the old auditorium. Not the new Sports Arena. Jnaki After graduation, the car shows competed with rock concerts and boat shows for space in the new Sports Arena. We liked the car shows and went to a few notable rock concerts after high school. The Tridents Car Shows were the best. At first, it was all hot rods and custom cars. Then a few custom motorcycles came on the scene. (similar to the original, Oakland Roadster Show) As the popularity of custom motorcycles grew, they were given the whole second floor landing area as their own area. Note: The members probably did not like it that a slogan or chuckle was ever present. A laughable quote: “one had to have three dents in order to be a member of the club.” Ala… Tridents. We all laughed at that comment, but did not want to stir things up and get poked with a real trident. Ahhh, teenage antics…YRMV
