After looking for a part for over 30 years a very gracious man in Rocky Mtn. House, Alberta GAVE me one and REFUSED payment! So with renewed interest I went over my parts to find two stripped fenders had some surface rust. 60 grit and a PA/Eastwood surface prep tool got them looking pretty good once again. I plan on epoxy coating them but not for awhile. So should I coat them with Gibbs, Ospho, or just plain old vinegar? I don't want a huge chore to prep for the epoxy later.... Real world experiences...?
All I can say is that if you are going to coat them with some sort of oil or grease use something that won't contmainate the metal like sillicone will. If they were going to sit for quite a while I'd be inclined to get a can of Rustoleum or hardware store rust stop paint and spray on a coat to seal them figuring that when I got round-to-it I'd sand it all off and do it right.
I've used Gibbs and subsequently painted successfully without issue. I've also taken surface rusted parts straight to paint following rust removal with Industrial Metal Supplies (IMS) metal prep (which might be Ospho?), again with no issues. In both cases I've thoroughly cleaned with panel wipe before painting. This involved literally rinsing the panels using a pump up dispenser. Arguably wasteful and excessive but not wanting to leave things to chance! Much of the metal had multiple applications of Gibbs applied over a number of years. All painted with epoxy followed by primer and paint. Chris
Gibbs. My PU was naked for over a year in my shop preparing it for primer and paint. A shot of Gibbs every few months kept the metal perfectly clean. I wiped it down with solvent and shot it in DTM epoxy primer when I started the final body work with no issues
Gibbs https://gibbsbrandlubricant.com/about/ Ospho https://www.ospho.com/data.htm Rustmort https://semproducts.com/product/rust-morttm/morttm#resources Vinegar https://weldingproperty.com/using-vinegar-to-clean-metal-before-painting/ Lots of info out there on these. Each is different and is used in different cases and costs. You have to decide how clean the original metal is, how well prepped, how long you are going to hold off on fully priming and painting (sealing) the metal and how much you want to spend, both in money and time. Is this going to be a scuff and shoot or are you going to the lengths of this? https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum...4k-swapmeet-body-the-old-chrome-coupe.1284710
Thanks for all the replies. I did one fender in Rustmort, another in vinegar, one other in Ospho, and when I find some Gibbs I’ll try that as well! May as well run a little experiment!
I love Gibbs so much I have to get it sent to me here in Japan. Absolutely awesome product and nice people too!
