Len Williams was an employee at Boeing.
When the car was featured in Hot Rod I thought this would be the beginning of something.

It turns out that turbines are not really the best engine for cars...something about the RPM they operate at?

The gas turbine that Chrysler used in the 60’s idled at 18,000-22,000 rpm’s and had a redline of 60,000 rpm’s, there was a 10/1 gear reduction that made it “usable”

Gas turbine engines are also not so good at varying rpm and power levels. They do best at constant rpm and power. So even with the reduction, they just are not a good fit for a car that is accelerating, then low throttle cruising, then letting off and stopping.

Meanwhile, back to my mid life crisis. Since I've gotten into my mid 60s, it's turning into an old life crisis :) hearing, eyesight, back pains, vertigo, blood pressure, all sorts of fun things.

So my wife and I are going on a little drive this weekend with some friends who drive more modern sporty cars. We'll be taking up the rear position on the drive down US 191, formerly US 666, the Devil's Highway, across the eastern Arizona mountains. It's a fun drive, from Springerville down to Morenci. We expect rain on the way up to Chandler tomorrow, we'll meet up with the others there Saturday morning, and might hit some rain on the way northeast.

A little bit of tune up stuff, since I hadn't done any for about 6000 miles. Checked the dwell, it's spot on, and pulled a plug, it looks fine. Almost 29k miles on the car now since I've had it.

Wow, that looks like a great road.

Mt Graham looks like it has a cool road also.

Watch for us, heading to Pinetop for "Run to the Pines" this weekend, also expecting rain from Springerville on Friday

She mentioned that the car show was going on. We stopped and visited it once, I think in 2016.

The weather today is petty rough, we might head up to Phoenix early.

And we got a lightning strike, so far the only thing it fried is the cable modem, so no internet. But my phone still works.

Quite the light show last night. Sorry to hear you were at the receiving end of one.
    Enjoy the drive!

The radar map shows it moving NE, hopefully you’ll be out of it south of Tucson.
    Safe travels.

It rained from Springerville to Pinetop and as I look out the window of the hotel, it is still raining a bunch. Looks like it will spoil the gathering at the hotel this evening but the forecast for tomorrow shows no rain. At least you have a hood.............................

We got to the Phoenix area without much rain. As soon as I parked at the hotel, it let loose. Kind of good timing.

Just checked, they mention Phoenix (where Jim was last) and Globe. Both are on the map I posted.

Here's hoping they are okay. At least he had his lucky shirt on.

It all subsided before we got there. But getting through globe took a long time.

We stopped by the car show in Pinetop for a little bit. Now in Springerville, will head down devil's highway in the morning. Also met up with one of my kids, who will be driving an ot sporty car.

31 2dr Chevy phaeton because I never saw one before.

Wow! I’ve never seen one either. My dad bought a barn find 31 Chevy roadster out of Laveen, Az about 30 years ago.

I was thinking of the festival. There was a neat display at the car show. Several running.

Not sure why, but everytime I see one of those hit and miss engines running and shaking I have to stop, watch, listen and admire.
