Folks Of Interest Early Stewart Warner gauge thread

Couple recent SW finds.

 

Just thought I'd share this piece of Stewart-Warner history that I stumbled across & get it set in the greatest Stewart-Warner resource on the planet. I've never seen one of these before. It's made of brass with a removable surround, which is only crimped on in spots. The date code is actually legible, which is December of 1946. It was made by S/W for the Federal Marine Motor Company out of Chicago. There's a mish-mash of gauges...two S/W Wings electric water temps, four early rear mount S/W Tulip Pointers & two electric tachs of unknown origin. Interestingly, the measurements & shape of the panel is very similar to the S/W Hollywood (or Master) panel, which wasn't around in 1946. The Wings gauges have a 1948 date code on them, which was the first year of production. They do not appear to have the six digit model number on the bottom of the faces, which is something I never encountered before. It's heavy.

 

That's cool, must have been a fancy two engine boat with the two key switches like that. I just got a Hollywood/Master 8 panel that has two key switches like that. Interesting that it has two separate amp gauges, did old boats have two totally divorced charging systems? I guess I never really thought about that.

@patsurf a set of wing gauges and one in the background is a earlier version of crescent 3.5 inches reverse .

@patsurf Continental John has a pretty cool example. MotoMeter was another manufacturer that made the Anti-clockwise rotation tachometers and they were often found in vintage boats. Many were used in the beautiful Chris Craft wood boats as well as the Riva's of the 1930's and 40's.

Here is an unrestored MotoMeter anti-rotation tach. Note the aggressive lines on the crescent moon needle. The design was beautiful and varied slightly from Stewart Warners slightly softer needle design. When fully restored, these gauges are a work of art.

 

Looking for a Wings Water Temp. Gauge as pictured. The copper tube on mine is broken.

Picked this up at the local swap today. It’s 5”. Dont know much about it.

 

Nice score. Here's info on it from my 1957 S/W "Book of Profits." There was a mechanical version, which are more sought after, simply because they're vastly easier to get working...no antiquated electronics & obscure parts needed. However, that new gizmo (discussed in that tach thread here) that can supposedly get any old electric tach working might do the trick to get yours working. It looks to be in really nice shape.

 

Thanks @fleetside66 . I got it super cheap! I mostly picked up with intent to trade it for something else. Maybe good big logo tach or speedo. I’m going to unscrew the glass and clean it up. It has a small amount of dust in it.

 

Probably nothing to do with Stewart Warner gauges but trivia I was thinking about yesterday. On older Mopar 12V cars, the voltage limiter was located inside the fuel gauge.

 

Never seen a FU gauge

 

Wish I had one in traffic today...

Picked this up a while back.

 

Can someone tell me about these S-W gauges, they came with the car I purchased. Apparently they have been completely restored, everything works properly. They must be early gauges because no holes for back lighting.

but neither had gauges, i have a black face police special speedo that will go in place of the feet o meter!

it looks like the “Fun” gauge is almost half full

 

I picked this up today. It’s going in the classifieds. It would be cool in a banger project or a “Race of Gentlemen” project. I just wiped it off I didn’t clean it
