I was looking at Facebook marketplace for Flathead Parts when this bad boy popped up on my screen. A few hours later, it was in my garage. I could not say no. Anyway, does anyone have any information on these bikes? I see some on the Internet, but I am trying to figure out what I have. Should be a fun little winter project. I am hoping it’s a real whizzer and think it is but am having a hard time id’ing it. Trying to add photos but having issues. Will keep trying. well I can’t add photos (says they are too big…never had that issue) but here’s a link https://imgur.com/a/rlUkwkk
Looks like a Model H … look at the serial number on the case side next to drain plug and most likely starts with an H … Memory says 1946 or ‘47 Cool find! Interesting it has ignition coil… can’t see in photo but must be missing the magneto next to the flywheel, which also would mount the missing belt cover … Nice car too!
That is too cool, don’t know if I like where the coil and wire is located, a little to close for my comfort level lol Dan
I had that thought too! Took the engine out and it was producing compression so I took the head off and the valves were stuck. Kept taking it apart and found the lifters frozen in the bores. Got that stuff cleaned up and will put it all back together and see if it runs. I do not believe it’s a real Schwinn whizzer but just the whizzer kit someone put on an old Schwinn. Still cool.
Nice!!!……with the “saddle baskets”, it would be great for cruising the swap meet!……great find!……..Mark
The HAMB collective is wide and deep, but there has got to be some small corner of the 'net that is all about those. Cool find and keep us up to date on it, please.
well, you asked. Haha. Turns out even though the engine turned over, there was no compression. So I took the engine out and started to take it apart. There was a little bit of water in the oil. I found both lifters, intake and exhaust frozen which explained the valves being stuck open. After wrestling them out I cleaned the lifters and the bores up with some 1200 grit sand paper. I’m waiting on some gaskets to put it back together. I think the carb is likely bad though so I’m looking for a better option. The throttle shaft is super loose which makes me think it will have a crazy vacuum leak. Anyway, that’s where I’m at. I think it’s a ‘47 h engine. The jury’s still out as to whether it’s a whizzer engine kit or a full on real Schwinn whizzer. Either way it’s a cool early skip tooth Schwinn bike. I’m a patina guy but I’m torn on painting or just cruising it as is (likely). The paint is definitely not original and probably a rattle can special from the 60s. Good times.
Well, if the paint is 60s spray, you can clean and run it, do your own spray and have fun, or restore it. Your time, money and result. Have fun no matter which you choose!
If it was mine, I’d get it running first then I’d wipe down with Gibbs oil or something similar and see how it looks, ride it some. Maybe a winter restoration project? Dan
this is basically the plan. Make it run, clean it up. Then make it stop. Then decide if I want to enjoy as is or “restore.” I was wondering what I was going to do with my time this winter…..
Holy Cow, Matt, that is really cool. Now when you say you are going to take a whiz, it just means that you are heading out for a ride on your bike. Move over electric people. Bob
Go on the CABE forum...Classic and Antique Bicycle Exchange.....There is a forum just for Whizzers....
Looking at the front suspension, I’d say it’s a real “Whizzer Bike”. I’ve had several in the past, including a near “mint” version that was very similar to yours with the same front suspension. Also had a rare version that was direct drive, with foot pegs and no bicycle pedal system. Long gone, and sorry, no pics…
That is a photo of the State Seal of Hawaii Aloha decal on a Hawaiian Hotel board from the '40's. They were 5'-0" hollow wood body boards with openings for your hands. Hotels would loan them to guests....
Great score @Busmania . So now that you have dove into the deep end of the Whizzer Universe, you might potentially need these items that I have had sitting in an envelope and in a drawer for years. They are yours for the cost of the postage which will be figured out, once I hear from you. So send me a PM with your mailing instructions/address. 1 each Whizzer hat in very good condition. 1 each fresh sheet of reproduction Whizzer decals, for the left and right side of the gas tank and the Whizzer safety operating suggestions as well. Thank you from Dennis, AKA @41 GMC K-18
Well if it were mine, I would opt for keeping the patina the way it is and do what it takes to get it running and operating safely. I just thought the hat and decals, might be items of interest for @Busmania
I was just saying a thing that generally deters a resto is lack of original looking replacement decals
Precisely @The Chevy Pope While @Busmania may or may not do a restoration of that cool Whizzer, if he has the hat and decals, they can be a source of inspiration, as stated, the decals are not that easy to come by. I found the hat and the decals on a table at a swap-meet years ago! Thanks from Dennis.
41 gmc, I’d love that stuff! So cool. For now it will remain patina. Might restore later but priority is getting it on the road then decide. Engine is shot! More later.
