Made it down to Safford. The drive from Alpine to Morenci drops elevation from 8000 to 4000 feet. There are a lot of sharp turns. And we have to go as fast as we can.

the windshield is not very tall, that's all that fits And they work OK.

A couple pics of the car driving down the highway, taken by folks who went with us.

That's no typewriter. I think it's one of those old steam powered televisions. Maybe a Muntz or a DuMont.

Janet wanted to get out of the house, so we went for a little drive through the countryside. A jail tour, it turned out.

There used to be a lot of mining in southern AZ, all over the place. Gleeson is not very far from here, and was one of those small mining places. Of course the only sturdy buildings in the quicky built mining towns were the jails, so that's all that survived! used to be a thousand people or so at these ghost towns, a hundred years or so ago.

    jail tour map.jpg

We live at the blue J, The Thing is at the top at Johnson Rd, Courtland is just north of Gleeson, Pearce is just south of Sunsites.

The Gleeson jail wants to be a tourist trap, but there aren't any tourists.

    jail 1 plaque.jpg

Ghost Trail Rd is dirt, but in decent condition.

The Courtland jail is in rough shape, but still standing.

    jail 2 courtland - Copy.jpg

    jail 3 pearce - Copy.jpg

Pearce is in good condition, since no one can get near it.

    jail 3 plaque - Copy.jpg

We took 191, which used to be 666, the Devil's Highway, up to the interstate so we could stop at The Thing.

Note the odometer reading! can't plan this.

We did a little shopping and got lunch at The Thing. It's been here a long time, but they redid all the signs several years ago.

On the way home, we went through St David, in search of the 59 Edsel I sold to a guy in 2016. And found it! We delivered the car to him back then, and sort of remembered where it was, but had to drive around a while till I saw the distinctive tail hiding between two trees.

    How was your day? :)

thanks for the tour, you've become the hamb's amb***ador of travel, a position once held by the likes of Bob k and Denise.
I see an update on this thread and I think to myself, what is he up to now.

If you haven't been to Slaughter Ranch, in the Douglas neighborhood on the border of Mexico....Janet might like it for another day trip.....the weather sure is nice for it....

Interesting place to visit, John Slaughter was a Cochise County sheriff. This property is on the border of Mexico. From the front porch, you can watch the traffic on Mexican Route 2 (runs East-West). We were there nearly 20 years ago.

I doubt if Squirrel can tell from the driver's seat. That seems to be where he is most of the time.

I went for a little drive to Tucson today, to see my brother. When I got home, the odometer said I'd driven the car 30,000 miles in the past two and a half years. Time flies when you're having fun!

The drive up. I took the scenic route, since they're working on I-10 and traffic is slow.

At his house in Tucson. They have cactus there.

I'd guess you don't want to see a picture of the F'n snow we got last night? Congrats on you enjoying your ride. Sounds like you have the bugs out of it?

Yeah, all that junk is still in Huachuca City. It looks a little different now, but I bet a lot of it is still where it was sitting 46 years ago, and probably a lot longer.
