You know how I can tell it's not your first rodeo? Because the first POS that fights someone that hard is immediately thrown as hard and as far as possible. You got it out, reached over and grabbed a camera, then took a non-shaky, focused picture of it first!
Thats Just Amazing even in a press. stuck /seized that tight . The chain Thought I have done , & there been time's I have drilled out centers of shaft's & other to release tension. Most time press fit like .0010 to .0025 thou Wonder @ Assembly if One was heated other cooled Then Bearing & pinion was dropped On & in ? Like a Wedding band
I owned a loaded 1986 Eagle wagon years ago (leather, cruise, tilt, p/seats, air, p/w, p/locks, change from 2 to 4 wheel on the fly etc) and I absolutely LOVED that car. With the carrying capacity of the wagon and the four wheel drive, it did everything well at any time of the year (Canada here so we get snow in winter). Tow a boat in the summer ... many times, tow two snowmobiles in the winter ... many times, plow through snow most other cars on the road got stuck in ... many, many times. As much as I loved that car and it's ability to "do everything", running mid-nines was something I can promise you, it did NOT do. To be honest, if I hadn't watched Drag Week, I wouldn't have believed it. Not only did it run 9's, I believe it made it through the full week too so that adds to the awesomeness as well. That reminds me, it was -40 in Bancroft Ontario, a buddy and I were at his trailer for some "sledding" ... guess who's car was the only one that would start? You got it, that "old carbed Eagle" boosted a few cars that frigid day Edit: final update on my roll bar bends question and the NHRA response ... of the FOUR NHRA tech contacts I reached out to, to this day, only ONE has bothered to respond and their response, although I specifically asked for it, did NOT include pointing me to exactly where "tubing must be uniform in outside diameter before, during and after bend" is written. Personally, I think that's disgustingly pathetic on their part My question wasn't "why are the bathrooms at national events so dirty" or "for the money spent, I should have received more chips/fries with my burger", it was a specific safety related question regarding the interpretation of THEIR OWN RULES regarding safety (either real or imagined).
I did get a picture of the engine in it.... and his trailer, which looks like he really has his act together.
I just made myself laugh with this thought ... NHRA stands for No Hurry Responding to Assholes. I mean, it ain't like the shoe don't fit me And back to our regularly scheduled program
Back to the regularly scheduled program...rearends? proctology? A closer look at what was holding the bearing onto the pinion. The new used pinion is in great condition in this area. Strange. Also, the rear bearing pressed off easily.
Looks like the signs of brinelling to me. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brinelling @AmishMike the reason those engines have a bulletproof reputation is because AMC over the years threw so much different junk at it, but it kept going! Plastic valve covers, PCV systems that were wacky and used horrid materials, Lean Burn carbs to rival Mopar. Ford, French and other lowest bidder parts bin ignition and emissions equipment, cooling systems, then toss in pilots taking them up, down and sideways beyond design; it earned that rep!
Bravo @squirrel ! The mighty Squirrel ( Jim Forbes) will NOT be daunted or defeated when it comes to getting to the bottom of the problem, and onto the path of curing the problem!
back to work...first try with the rear end setup was pretty bad, using the shim that came on the 3.27 pinion. So I tried the much thicker shim that was on the 3.73s in this housing, using the original side shims, and get this...I think it'll be ok. But I'll do some more staring at it, I might try some different compound to see if I can get a better imprint.
I usually have good luck reusing the shims out of the housing. Im having a hard time reading the pattern with that marking compound
On the 8.8s if the backlash is off I normally swap the carrier shims side to side and that makes it perfect
Went for a few drives, the last one about 60 miles. Seems to be fine now... the "wa-wa-wa" sound in the rear went away, probably one of the bearings I replaced. There's a slight singing noise now, very faint, which changes with throttle. Not surprising for being used gears. I also calibrated the speedometer by changing the gear in the transmission, it's within 1 mph now, although the odometer is off by about 3%. I'd rather have the speedo working in this one, it's pretty easy to get going a lot faster than you think you are.
Back in 80's being @ local stock car track During Qualifying There where certain Car's as warm up to make Qualified position runs, You could hear rear gear Some had a unique sound , I was told Zoom brand gear's , Do not know if True , But definitely a different sound.
No ,I am sure gm 10 /12 9 inch . these car where Late Model class's 80's body's asphalt Straight 6 cars V8 , Camaros , T birds , Regal ,Monte Carlo's Track was Old Dominion Speedway I belive 3/8's oval I think around 66 Switched from dirt to paved , The original track closed around 2012 Drag strip opened in 1951 do not know when oval was added , ODSW claim to be the first drag strip on the East Coast
Knowing how 'varied' setups can be and how some get superstitious about dirt track racing, I can imagine they set them up different for some reason.
